Everything I consume causes acid reflux

Recommended Posts

I'm 3.5 wk post op and it feels like everything I consume gives an acid reflux feeling. I don't know if it means I'm full? I don't care to eat or drink because of this. I take Omeprazole every other day like the doc recommended.

It's this normal? Will I basically have acid reflux for rest of my life? It wad never an issue before but my surgeon did a hiatal hernia repair during sleeve. 3 more weeks till follow up appointment.

Have you tried taking the medicine daily?

I, too, wonder why the Omeprozole is every other day. Mine is to be taken every day about 1/2 hour before Breakfast before I eat anything. At 3 1/2 weeks are you eating purees or soft food yet? When I started to actually eat something, I had to chew ridiculously well - even mashed potatoes and pudding, just to incorporate saliva to aid digestion. Just be aware of what you can tolerate, and don't push it. Your stomach has been through a lot, and is the boss of you now. Not a good time for caffein, bubbles, straws, or anything spicy. Measure the amount of food you are allowed, and never eat the last bite. Signs of fullness can be reflux, hiccups, even sneezing.

Im doing purees at the moment. I do chew very well. I haven't had anything to spicy, caffeine, carbonated. It's rare that I use a straw one pack of a Protein shake has a straw lol like caprisun drinks.

Ive noticed hiccups before when I ate scrambled eggs I thought I ate too fast so I stopped. I generally stop as soon as any discomfort hits (acid, hiccups... Never sneezing).

I even experience this with Water so I think I must be full but ill never get more than 40oz liquid at this rate.

I had this problem too. It passed.

Have you tried changing food?

I like ice cream or custard because it goes down smooth. oatmeal is also another favorite.

I know that bacon is out of the question atm for me. I also know that I can't really eat burgers.

Are you mixing Protein powder with that? I was choosing things with little more protien. Can chicken, eggs, Beans, ground turkey.

Keep in mind drinks have this effect on me to.

eggs are tough as early out as you still are. I would not suggest ice cream. At that stage I was able to eat boiled egg mixed with mayo but not scrambled.

Call your doc but I still suggest upping the needs to daily.

@@HawaiianTexan Every other day is not good enough If your having acid, did you tell your surgeon? I take Omeprazole 20mg every morning and he ok'd me to take two a day if I needed because twice I felt that burn. What mg are you taking? I'm not going to tell you to take meds but If it were me I would be taking those puppy's daily until you call Monday and check. You shouldn't be hurting when you have a medication specifically for acid.

Hi. I agree with others on this post about taking your stomach meds every day. I take Nexium every day. Also my doctor prescribed a drug called Reglan. It works to move the contents of your stomach out easier so you don't suffer from acid reflux as much. You can google it and ask the doc if it would be a good idea to try it. And you might even need to switch to something other than omeprazole. Protonix, Carafate, Nexium, Pepcid. These are all good choices too. You might need something different and stronger. I take mine twice daily

Occasional use of a PPI is for people who have occasional heartburn, not for people who have just had sleeve surgery and or those with known conditions such as GERD.

Acid reflux for people like us is not to be managed like when a headache occurs and medication is then taken to treat it. The acid is there period, which is why a daily (sometimes even twice per day) PPI is needed. Please follow up with your surgeon about this before it begins to affect your intake and lead to dehydration or esophageal problems.

I just spoke to my doctor about this as I was having severe acid reflux after being sleeved and a hernia repaired. He said that the acid reflux is due to the repair of the hernia and that I will go away in time. I wish he would've told me this when I saw him after surgery!!! He has me on Pepcid complete chewable.< /p>

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
