Help, I need lunch ideas...

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on 10/09/2014. I feel great. I am struggling since I have returned to work. I work 6am to 6pm. I am falling back into my old habits with NOT prepping for meals at work. Since I work these long hours 3 to 5 days a week, this means that I need to bring 3 meals. So when the co workers want to order out, I find that I will order something. Two things I realize is that 1 it's a waste of money and 2nd it's not what is real healthy and that I find I try to eat too much. On a positive note: They will order off the kids menu for me. it's usually subway, I remove the bread or Qudoba's kids bowl, lite on the rice. I'm tired of shakes 3 times a day too. What items do you bring? Thanks for the help!

I bring cheese sticks, diced chicken, a side salad, Greek yogurt, lots of bottled Water, carrots and hummus, Protein Bars and a Protein Drink. I'm a nurse and I also work 7a-7p 3-4x's a week. I try to pack at least 3 meals and a few Snacks when I go to work.

meat and cheese plates! Boiled eggs, chicken and tuna salad, any lean Protein really. If your not sick of Soups they can be a good option. I really like the P3 packs that have the meat cheese and nuts. They are small and perfect size.

I am fortunate that I work near my fridge and can easily run to the store for meals, but you mentioned that they go to Subway a lot for lunch. I really like their chopped salads and I can make one last for a few meals. I get double meat (usually turkey), lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and a lot of banana peppers. When it's all chopped up the tomatoes and banana peppers eliminate the need for any kind of dressing (at least for me) and the turkey is a good source of Protein. I can eat maybe 1/6 of a salad at a time, so I tend to eat it for lunch and dinner and then sometimes lunch the next day. If you mix up the meat and veggie options, that could potentially help knockout two of your meals.

Also, how do you feel about oatmeal for Breakfast? I eat the Quaker Weight Control version with 6g of Protein and it keeps me pretty full. When I was at work in the mornings, this worked well for me. Also, someone else mentioned soup- a good option that worked well for me were the Progresso light Soups, especially the veggie version. It's a little high in protein, but easy to take to work and make and good for you. Another option are those egg white patties that come in the freezer section. A light English muffin has 100 calories, the egg white patty has 25 and you can throw on a piece of turkey cooked in the microwave and it tastes a little like bacon for minimal extra calories. My sleeve is not terribly crazy about bread or eggs, so I usually only eat half of one of these with some ketchup and I'm good to go. Lastly, I am bad about Protein shakes, but for awhile I would make one before I left for work and sip on it during the drive and at my desk in the morning, which also helped cover my Breakfast need.

One of my easy lunches is deli chicken that I get shaved then I some different sauces to it. Buffalo and Greek yogurt or Spicy Southwestern mustard and Greek yogurt are my favorites. I usually pair this with some edamame or low fat cottage cheese. Easy and delicious!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
