Diarrhea after protein shake/ensure?

Recommended Posts

I am day 6 today and within minutes of sipping Protein Shake, ensure or glucerna I get spasms and explosive diarrhea. I have tried it in mornings and get 2-3 bowel motion by noon.

I wonder if it is because of shake or time?

ANyone had this issue?

Most Protein shakes give me explosive diarrhea or hideous gas. The only ones that I have found that do not are powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury and premier vanilla. powder Proteins other than Unjury are the worst. I have gotten to the point that I know what does not make me sick and find it is not worth trying anything else. Good Luck in your search.

I'm having the same problem and I'm 6 days post op today. I suspect that my tummy is just sick of them but it is happening with Soup as well.

I'm going to have a poached egg tomorrow morning and hopefully that will settle it down.

Did you work out your cause?

I'm 4 months post-op, and this occasionally happens to me. I usually nurse my morning Protein shake (have only 4-5 of these per week), but if I drink it faster diarrhea sometimes strikes! You DON'T want to be driving or out in public when this happens.

This is why you see in some people's signature lines: "Never trust a fart!"

Four days post op and having the same problem. Not explosive but watery. What is this so called crap about Constipation? Nope. Been taking pain meds and still have this issue. I'm afraid to go anywhere and have this problem. I don't want to wind up wearing an old persons diaper!

I think the stomach is not yet accepting food with relatively thicker consistency and inturn excites the whole bowel, as doesn't happen when I take clear juice or broth.

BTW you seem to have started at quite a low BMI 31, I though I was low at surgery 36.

Diarrhea is not that bad. I'd rather have this than Constipation. Its only the 4th day for me plus 2nd full day of Protein shakes. I think it will get better. Just need to learn what my stomach will and wont tolerate.

Thanks.

They are recommending it for some 30-35BMI's plus I have other complications that make me suitable and obesity runs in the family. BTW 31 was not my starting BMI it was just that I started the ticker at that BMI.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
