Liver Shrink Worries!

Recommended Posts

My mother and I are both going through this together! She lost 24lbs before her surgery and they almost closed her back up and didn't do it because her liver was still big! I'm two days away from mine! I checked Thursday and I'm at a 22lb (from 449 to 427) loss so far! I've struggled and not done so well keeping to the pre-op fast my doctor put my on but I'm determined to be strict, drink lots of Water, and exercise these last two days. Have any of you ever been turned down because your liver was too big? Is it a direct correlation between weightloss and the liver shrinking? Any words of advice or comfort for this nervous girl?

I did Protein Shakes and 1 very light high in Protein meal the last week before surgery. The day before I only did protein shakes and then stopped at 8pm because I was told to have nothing after that. I was 412 going into surgery and it was a breeze. I was told about fatty liver impeding surgery so I had really cut back in the last 2 weeks increasing my protein, and cutting out all carbs. Weight wise I didn't actually lose a lot, but I cut out all high fat foods.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
