Does anyone actually like their protein drink?

Recommended Posts

As a bit of background, I am 15 months out, and have been what I feel to be successful with the sleeve thus far. I don't tend to always get in my Protein though and even when I first started the sleeve process, I did not get into Protein drinks. First, I try to avoid chocolate for most of the year, so that knocks out a lot of good flavors, and second, well they taste gross and seem to have a lot of calories and ingredients that are not terrifically natural sounding. For those of you who really like your protein beverages, any ideas on brands that taste good or recipes that incorporate low calorie ingredients with a certain Protein powder? As of January 1 (the best start-a-diet-day ever), I would like to really work on getting in all of my protein, and I feel as if a liquid option once a day would be ideal.

I am lazy, so a pre-mixed, pull out of the fridge, and drink it option is probably what would be ideal for me long term, but I'm generally a little ambitious at the beginning of the year, so blender versions with fun, low-fat ingredients would also be helpful.

Thank-you everyone for your thoughts!

GENEPRO unflavored. Tasteless and you can put it in anything, and has like 30gms of Protein per tablespoon, not per HUGE scoop. I put it in about everything. Can't taste it. Of course, if it was in just plain Water , I bet you could taste it. But I don't think I would ever consider doing that. You can find it at Amazon.com

I can barely tolerate the powders, but I like the ready to go Muscle Milk. chocolate is the only flavor of theirs I've tried though.

Nope, I don't like any of it. But I can tolerate Premier Protein. Low sugar, high carb and it's grab and go.

Do you like beef Jerky? It's salty and good and I get to chew, chew, chew so it lasts a long time. 2oz is around 160 calories and 28g of Protein.

I've really like Premier Protein chocolate shakes since I first found them at Sam's club. I like mine a little thicker, so I throw in 1 scoop of a chocolate powdered Protein mix as well. Poured over ice, it tastes just like chocolate milk to me.

I drink optisource. It comes in Caramel and strawberry flavors. It was the Protein Drink they gave me at the hospital and I loved it. It's pre-mixed and comes in a little carton. I know you said you're not a fan of powders, but I think the Unjury brand is absolutely amazing!

I like them when I doctor them up. CVS whey Protein works for me. I add small doses of fruit, almond butter sometimes even frozen coffee. I may occasionally also add spinach, flax powder, tumeric, almond milk, greek yogurt, juice (typically frozen into ice cubes and Water. I work out in the mornings.

I make a double batch and have half as my pre-workout drink and the other after post work out as my Breakfast. When I am working out I burn whatever calories I take in. On my rest days I am a little less generous with add ins.

My trick for when a shake is too sweet or too thick is to simply add lots of ice and a bit of Water. You're still getting in the Protein but also some water.

Hi @@AvaFern, et al. I have seriously great morning Protein shakes - since you don't do chocolate much, ignore the second one.

First fave is just like Starbucks Frappucino: In a ziplock baggie I combine unjury vanilla Protein powder, my 3 tsp of benefiber, ½ cup unsweetened vanilla almond milk (or nonfat cow's milk is just as great), two pumps of SF Vanilla Torani Syrup, 2 pumps SF Caramel Torani syrup and a double shot of espresso. I zip it up, shake it to mix, and freeze seven of these each week of non-winter (see below for my winter drink!) Then in the morning I just take a baggie out of the freezer, crumble it into the blender and i'm GREAT to go! Holds me all morning, gives me a boost and I have a slushy Starbucks like thrill. Maybe i'm just easy, but this tastes fantastic.

Winter drink - it's colder and rainy in the Pacific Northwest in the winter, so each morning into my magic bullet goes: 6 ounces unsweetened vanilla almond milk (regular nonfat cow's milk is great too) a scoop of chocolate injury Protein powder, 3 tsp benefiber, two pumps SF peppermint Torani syrup, (add SF chocolate syrup if you like the flavor more intense) and then blend, microwave one minute while my double shot of espresso is making, combine and enjoy the better-than-Starbucks Peppermint Mocha! It's fabulous!!

Love those flavors, and I also mix vanilla shakes with SF Orange (cold - think creamsicle), warm OR Cold vanilla with SF caramel (YUM!) or vanilla warmed up with SF Almond also good warm or cold, but it's my favorite evening Protein boost to make a hot half one with the almond before bed when i'm still short on protein for the day. Marvelous.

Happy blending!

Kate

I love my Protein shakes and have had one everyday for the last 13 months. I rarely have the same kind in a single week. My favs....

Premier chocolate with milk and 1/2 banana

Syntrax matrix vanilla with PB2

Syntrax Matrix vanilla with peaches or berries.

Syntrax nectar lemonade with strawberries

Muscle milk cake batter with pumpkin pie Torani Syrup

Muscle milk red velvet cake with caramel Torani syrup

Premier chocolate or vanilla with English toffee Torani syrup

Premier strawberry with 1/2 banana

Syntrax Nectar cherry and Syntrax nectar Apple mixed

Syntha6 vanilla ice cream

Muscle milk cake batter with Syntrax nectar Apple

Syntrax nectar peach (plain or with OJ)

Garden of Life Raw Fit with almond Torani syrup.

Garden of Life Raw Protein chai

Geez, I could list another dozen flavor variations....

My protein smoothies end up with 30-40+ g of protein and are 24-32 oz. the chocolate, vanilla, cake and banana flavors I mix with milk. The nectar fruit flavors and Raw Fit I mix with Water. And way more liquid than the 6-8 oz recommended on the package. I also add an insoluble Fiber supplement which thickens them up. I drink them over 1-2 hours in between afternoon appointments.

I've tried literally dozens of different protein powders and RTD and yes, a lot of them did taste gross...I was not a fan of most Bariatric fusion, Bariatric Advantage, Jay Robb, or Isopure. If they were my only choices, I would NOT love Protein drinks.

Oh yeah, and if you like chai tea.... Brew a big cup of Celestial Seasoning Bengal Spice tea (a Decaf version similar to chai) and mix with 1/2 Premier Protein vanilla drink. Only 15g Protein, but a nice treat that's not so much like a typical Protein Shake. I also use the premier chocolate and vanilla as Creamers in my coffee.< /p>

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
