When should I start working out?

Recommended Posts

Starting weight: 344 7/15/14

Surgery weight : 292 11/24/14

Today weight: 259 12/19/14

I had my surgery on 11/24/2014 and I have been keeping active by walking and playing with our 11 month old lab puppy. I know I will have loose skin for rest of life but I really want to keep to a minimum if at all possible. We bought a total gym. But real nervous about how much to do right now.

I have been walking on the treadmill since the day I came home from the hospital!

My surgeon told me when I could begin to exercise.

Since it's different for everyone how fast they heal, your surgeon is the only one qualified to answer this. Sounds like you are doing a great job so far. Don't push the healing process.

Check with your surgeon before starting any major exercise routine. I know you are anxious to get started, but you need to allow your body time to heal. The average time before most doctors will begin considering major workouts other than walking is around the six week mark. That is pretty standard. The biggest caution I can give you is to PROTECT YOUR ABS. That is where the most damage was done and the area that needs the most time to heal. When you do start working out again, take it easy and ease into anything involving your stomach muscles. Any time you feel a twinge or they feel sore take a break for the day and stick to walking. Give yourself a day or two to heal and then get back at it. Over time your muscles will heal and get strong and that's when you will be ready to really go to town.

It sounds like you are pumped to do amazing things. If there is anything I can do to help you out along the way, don't hesitate to ask.

First I would like to say congrats and welcome to the losers bench, I agree with the above statements , I would just walk until you received the permission from your doctor because as stated your outsides may look heel but it takes the inside alot longer . I was not approved to exercise at the gym until I was 8 weeks post opt and I was approved for aqua aerobics only. Good luck my friend and keep us posted.

Ask your Dr. I had to wait until my 6wk checkup to get cleared to do anything outside of walking. :) and I did walk all I could. Hugs of support

I started at 4 week mark per my docs ok. He had said it would be 4-6 weeks. I had 0.0 issues after surgery and started hard at it at that time. Good luck.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
