7 weeks post op and having food issues

I'm 7 weeks post op and need some advice. I have been tracking my food prior to surgery and continuously thereafter. My struggle is that I serve myself a portion of food but I don't want to eat the whole portion. I find myself trying to finish it so that I will know how much food and Protein that I've eaten.

I don't like forcing myself to eat. I don't want it to become a bad habit but I don't know how to keep track of my food.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Just cut back on your initial serving so you can more accurately track.

You could try 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup... maybe just a tablespoon to start.

Don't force anything, just so you can track it. I could maybe eat 1-2 tablespoons at a time when I was 7 weeks out. I never bothered with the measuring or counting. I just ate when I was hungry and only until satisfied, not full. Made healthy choices (protein and veggies and a little fruit until I reached goal). It doesn't make sense to overeat just to hit a number. If you can't get enough Protein from solid food at this point (I certainly couldn't) go ahead and add in Protein Drinks. I'm 1 year out and I still have one everyday so I don't have to stuff myself to get in all my protein.

You can eat then track what you actually eat or I use the "lose it "app and I go in and readjust it When I need too...which is quit often.

Love this advice...I journal everything I eat, but never really count anything. I am 8.5 weeks out, and I find that I can't eat much more than a few teaspoons at a time either. I try to keep it to 3 meals a day, but I stop whenever I'm full. I used to be a prominent member of the clean plate club...not anymore!

Initially I would get really full. I broke my meals into 5 smaller meals since sometimes I couldn't even eat a ¼ cup of anything. I'd split it in half and track it that way. I didn't want to force myself to eat anything because that felt like going back to old habits of stuffing myself.

Turning in my clean plate club membership card was SO hard. But I became the charter member of the leave 4 bites-one for each dog club instead. The dogs are big fans of the new club!

Thanks for the responses. I talked to the Nut and she said don't focus on the tracking. She has given me other goals.

My Iron is low and I have yet to get the minimum amount of liquids in per day so she has me focusing on those 2 things now.

You really do have to find something that works for you. Are they prescribing Iron supplements?

No prescription. She told me to switch to 2 prenatal Vitamins per day. I had trouble swallowing those when I was pregnant. So the hunt is on for prenatals that are chewable.

And I am going to relax on the tracking what I'm eating. I want to focus on healthy eating and not obsess about food. I got the go ahead to see if my sleeve can handle a salad so if I can I'm pretty sure that will be majority of my meals.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
