11 year veteran with heartburn/intestinal issues

Recommended Posts

I had a RNY done 11 years ago. Until March of this year I had no complications. In March I started to experience problems with my bowel movements and developed heartburn. I also started to have problems keeping food down. I started to drop weight again and because some days I can't keep food down I don't know how to keep from losing any more weight. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this and can give me some advice on what I should be doing and not doing to fix this problem. Thanks in advance for your help

Call your doctor. It sounds like your gallbladder could be acting up. I've been told that down the road it's actually fairly common for WLS patients to have problems with their gallbladders at some time post op.

good luck and take care

I too am 11 years out, started about 1 1/2 years ago slowly started to have heartburn certain foods I couldn't eat anymore a little vomiting after I ate, tums worked at first but as time went on I could eat OR drink anything. I vomited from 3:30pm TIL around 11:00pm 10-15 times per night by the end. I had maintained 140-145 for all these years then WHAM! I went from 145 to 103 pounds in a matter of 3 months. I had been to the ER several times for the vomiting, not eating or drinking and the VERY sharp pains I was getting in my sternum area. The did MRI's, blood work, ultrasounds and everything always came back normal. I told them it is NOT normal for me to be 103 pounds. They finally got me in to get an endoscopy done, when I awoke from that the doctor was on the phone with the ER admitting me, he said he couldn't get in very far, that I was swollen. At the hospital they did a barium swallow and on screen you saw the liquid go in my mouth down the back of my throat, get to my stomach and BAM! There it was. CLOSED off! The surgeon told me he was surprised I made it that far, that I must have good genes or something because with what was going on with my body, I should have stroked out or had a heart attack. Long story shortened a little bit. Had emergency surgery for 1. Hiatel hernia. 2. Removed a very bad ulcer. 3. Total rebuild a NEW pouch. Since then I've not vomited once and feel 100% better.

I am 9 yrs out I have had problems with GERD pretty much from day 1. I ended up in the ER with what I thought was a heart attack. They found nothing and gave me antacids and sent me home.

I went to see my surgeon and decided to do a endoscopy. I have an ulcer so am now on Omeprazol daily and Carafate 4x a day. Which I may need to be on for life.

I'm 4+ years out and also have the gastrointestinal issues you speak of. I take omeprazole, which I think is aka: Prilosec. This can cause diarrhea. I also started on Lactaid pills and those have made a world of difference. But I know, I cannot eat a bunch of fruit, or veggies, or high fat or sugar because my stomach responds unfavorably. I seem to be OK with carbs and keep my weight loss so I'm grateful for that. And weirdly, since having surgery, I can almost never eat eggs without barfing.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
