strange topic...have you?

My breath is offensive! I brush my teeth and "swish" with Listerine every day but I think my diet is contributing to my foul breath. My husband even said something this morning. Has anyone experienced this and what have you done....surely with Christmas next week and time with family, I don't want to knock anyone over with festering odor.

Yes! I have been told it is because your body is releasing ketones. It from your high Protein low carb diet. I agree it is gross!

I think it gets better after your body adjusts. I bought a little tiny bottle of sweet breath and put a few drops on my tongue every now and then.

I assumed it was from drinking all these Protein shakes, but I've also heard the ketone thing. Lately I have been smelling other people's breath, which I've never really noticed before. I'm sorry for them and for me at the same time lol. I bought some sugar free mentos mints (too scared I'll accidentally swallow gum at only 7 days out and send my new sleeve into a frenzy). Here's to hoping it gets better for all of us soon :)

Thanks everyone. I was told to try those Listerine strips too. God I hope this doesn't last long....I'm so self conscious about it now!

I haven't had surgery yet (1/19!!!) but my friend had bypass two years ago and went through the same thing - like everyone else said its ketones... Listerine strips are your friend - they say not to stock up on anything prior to surgery because your tastes will change but I have a stockpile of these already. :)

I have noticed this as well, and I am very sensitive to smells now as well. I can't stand to have anything in the kitchen trash because I can smell everything and it turns me off to the idea of eating completely. I've been brushing more often but when I return to work I can't brush all day long so I will be buying mints!

I think I live on Listerine strips and have since I started drinking Protein shakes pre-op. I thought it was the shakes but ketones sound more plausible. The cinnamon ones are my go to for a better tasting mouth.

OK - so it's a "no go" on the Listerine strips for me....made me nauseous. I have Listerine spray which is working well. I started stage-4 today and have been told the breath issue will go away once I start eating regular food on a daily basis.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
