Beginning this journey

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm new to this forum. My name is Kelli and I started my surgery journey in October. I have done the psych evail, a sleep study and blood work. I have been seeing my weight loss doc, dieting and exercising since 2009. Lost about 70lbs in the beginning getting down to 200lbs then had a few injuries that set me back. Finally got to the point that I am tired of being in constant pain in my back, hips and knees tired of feeling tired and feeling like I am killing myself dieting and and exercising with nothing really working so talked to the doc about surgery as an additional tool. Only had one other surgery in my life (acl 3ys ago) so this is pretty scary but exciting at the same time. Now dealing with crazy insurance with hopes of surgery in early March. My doc has recommended I try the post surgery diet so I aclamate myself to the changes. Did anyone else try this before surgery? How did it go?

Hello and welcome! I'm not sure what your surgeon considers a post surgery diet? I did a two week liquid diet.< /p>

@@kellogirl428 Welcome! Yes, some doctors advise that you go ahead and start a high Protein / low carb diet for the few months leading up to surgery. You should also go ahead and get off caffeine, carbonation, and alcohol. Start taking really tiny bites of food and chew them thoroughly, don't drink 15 mins before a meal or until 30 mins after. Take these changes in stages, don't try to do them all at once. Then, when you're closer your dr. will put you on a pre-op diet that she/he deems necessary in order to shrink your liver and get it ready for surgery. Best of luck to you!

Hello & welcome. You'll find that different doctors have different protocols. Many have had to do pre-op diet & just as many have not. People are successful both ways.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
