How long does the surgery take

My surgeon had told me to expect about three or four hours and he advised my family of that as a timeline. I had the bypass which does take longer than the sleeve to have done. On the day of surgery, one of the only things that I remember from waking up was seeing my husband and my best friend standing at the foot of my bed and they said "It went so well that he finished in 2 1/2 hours!". My surgeon did say that my liver was no issue so my pre op diet must have done the job it was intended for but I was very strict and followed it to the letter. Also, I am not built with a very large abdomen, I carry most of my weight in my hips and legs which his nurse said sometimes is a benefit in the actual procedure. One of my best friends had the sleeve done this summer and her family lives on the other side of the state so I waited in the waiting room and reported to her dad while he traveled. Her procedure took several hours, I was in the waiting room for at least three hours. Again, her shape may have played a part as she carried most of her weight in her abdomen and has long legs. We are built exactly opposite. I hope this may help to answer some of your inquiries. Best Wishes on your journey!

Hey I had mine on Nov 19th and surgeon told my family mine was 2hours. Went very well but the first few hours in recovery I threw up because of the anasthesia.

@anewme15: I feel like I am doing fairly well with my weight loss, I am currently sitting at about 43 pounds lost in 50 days which I feel is very successful. I had one major setback last week which was pleurisy around my left lung and hindered my workout for a few days as I had to rest and take pain meds......again. But I'm feeling good again and back into mischief! How are you doing?

@Gingerisgreat: Hi, oh my, pleurisy! Glad you are back on the mend. That is just awesome for your weight loss! Wow! Good job. I'm doing ok. Cut out the pop on Dec.11. It's hard. I'm really looking forward to my dietician / behaviorist app. on Jan. 23. I hope that it's not too long after that I get my pre op info session. What about you, did it take you long? Keep me posted. Have a great one!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
