I would try not to pack it in or on at this point. I went to Dr. Michaelson and at the consult he asked that I loose 10 lb. My BMI was at 48. I had my case of loosing 8 lb and then mother's day came and I slipped. I kept up the grazing and last meal syndrome until Tues. before my surgery. I went in on the 17th and was banded. They do weigh you and I was down 5 lb. He told of one lady he asked to loose 20 and she gained 20. He sent her home and told her to come back when she was serious. OUCH. I have heard that depending on your size, 30 lb to loose prior is not unusual. I think they said if you are male, BMI over 50, and have any high BP or Diabetes you need to loose 10 lb for each one prior to surgery. THey offered me the Medifast shakes at cost ($38/case) to get it off quick. 5 shakes and a light meal a day. Personally, I think he made it 10 after he found out my addiction to regular Pepsi!

It is worht it though. I am down 7 lb since Thursday's surgery and I am not in too much pain. Check out the board for WA, there are several of us at NWWLS and St. Francis. Lots to read about.

Most places will schedule the surgery after all the pre-op tests are done. In my case, I had to have an upper GI and the psych evaluation before they would schedule. Then after they schedule, they will have you come in a week ahead of time for any other last-minute tests (in my case, it was a chest xray and an EKG). Good luck Wade.

I scheduled at my surgeon consult for 2 weeks out. I had no health problems, so no pre-op testing for me. ( I had the nurse & psych on the same day and asked if the Dr. was available. He was and I had all 3 appointments and scheduled surgery in one day) You have to have the payment in full one week prior to surgery.

You don't necessarily need to have specific medical conditions to have pre-op tests required. The ones that I underwent were standard for all patients who use my surgical group.

I'm going through the Center for weight loss surgery in Federal Way, Wa. They have a lot of appointments Labs, psych work up, endoscopy, nutritional counceling etc.. and two Dr. apt's. He asked that I loose as muchas I can not a specific number and told me to eat only "Atkins" type diet. No caffine, soda or carbs. I'v lost 8lbs. in two weeks but, I've been slipping lately. Then 10 days before surgery he wants me to be on a Clear liquid diet with 90grams of protien and 3 ltrs of Water (I'm drowning)

With my Dr. They just wanted the money up-front and then they sched. surgery. I choose to wait a month because of all the tests that I needed to do they are standard for all of his patients

Actually it was fine it took about 11/2 hours. I filled out two tests one for depression and another to see if I had any serious mental illness. He also, asked me a battery of questions. What was my diet going to consist of post surgery, how much weight did I expect to lose, How would I veiw myself with excess skin after the los. Did I have a family history of abuse. Where my weight issues originated from etc... I was honest and tryed to be realistic with him. It went well but, it really made me think about this whole thing. He suggested that I get a councelor lined up in case I need it later because of all of the changes that are going to happen.

It was good It took about an 1 1/2 hour. He asked a lot of questions and had me fill out two tests. He said that the primary reason is to try and weed out people that don't have good insight into the underlying issues that can occur with weight loss and why one is over weight in the first place. He asked a lot of questions; How was my family of origin, abuse, why I thought that I was overweight, How I would handle extra skin, what my expectations are, my goal wieght, Specific dietary qustions etc... Overallit went well, he did sugges to look for a councelor for the future when I start loosing and dealing with those changes. He also, said to try and build support systems. So I'm happy that I found this site.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
