Emergency trip to Toronto

Recommended Posts

So ya'll remember last week I was not sure if I had heartburn or gall stones? I was getting used to not eating close to bed time because if I did I would "spit" a few times before I could fall asleep. On Friday nite I drank nothing before bed. Spit up too much (I had booked an un-fill with the sweaty dr in Winnipeg for May 30th~ TLBC got voice mail re: the burning) Woke up 3 am must have inhaled some liquid from my belly - coughed it out. Fell back asleep, at approx. 5:30 am I woke barely being able to breath. I was gasping for air. I believe I aspired stomach contents. It took me what felt like forever to cough up what ever was in there. And still I was gasping for air. My chest was in huge amount of pain. I tried to sip some Water but it would not stay down. I used agravol suppositories(sp) (thanks argon) cause I felt like vomiting.

I told my husband I NEEDED to see a doctor but I was so scared I did not want to go to the hospital in Winnipeg and end up with some brilliant dr going "duh, I never seen one of these before." So I checked west jet for flights and prices. There was one I could fly Saturday Afternoon and fly back sunday am. So that's what I did. Them I took a cab to the Scarborough Grace hospital. I had to drive 3hrs to get to the airport the 3 hrs on the plane. Got to the ER at 6:30pm The triage nurse looked at me like I was crazy. Thought I just wanted a de-fill. Did not listen to my story of almost croaking in the am. She said I had "picked the busy day"

to come. I told her "if I thought I could wait I would have". She said I'd have a long wait. OK I'll wait. So just before 12:00am the doc came in told him my story he called dr yau and he suggested what the doc should take out . He removed the liquid. Immediate relief except for my chest was still in pain from the coughing.

I headed for a hotel and had an uneventful nite of sleep flew home the next day.

I would do it again, but won't have to. The doc had a great suggestion to get DVD and take it with me to the er wherever I went!

Chalk it up as experience!:biggrin1:

Holy Crap Lila!!! Sorry you went through it but I don't blame you for going to the SG and getting info directly from Dr Yau. I'm glad you are well (or getting there).....and yes, TLBC does have a great DVD which can come in very handy.

Also, let that be a lesson to us all....if this starts to happen....GO GET A DEFILL ASAP....don't wait for it to get as bad as what happened to Lila. It IS a warning sign. That too happened to me a few months ago and at the insistence of Mr Yoda, I went and got the defill....otherwise, I too would have ended up at the same bad place....I have no doubts!!!

All should learn from the "mistakes" we make so you don't have to go through the same ones!!

Thanks for sharing Lila...and take care!

Holy Crap is right! That is a very scarey thing. I can only imagine how you must have been feeling. I am glad you are doing better now and yes it is a lesson that we all need to learn from.

Thanks for posting and keeping us up to date.

Oh! Marcar... don't be afraid. It was aweful, yes, but I do not regret getting my band or that experience. Flying to Toronto was my choice. I just don't want people where I live and work know my business. And the $375/ flight was nothing since I already $16000 for the surgery.

My last fill was Dec 5th(my third) and I had a small de-fill under fluro (In Puerto Vallarta!) everything was good...pretty much until I started experiencing what I thought was acid reflux or gall stones.

Hi Lila,

Yeah, I experienced major problems and thought it was everything else but after getting a couple of defills I'm feeling much better. Although probably too loose now since I can't seem to lose that last lb. I go up and down a couple of pounds the last month. sigh...could be worse - I could be many more lbs ago!

Have a great weekend and glad you're feeling better. It is scary!

Hi guys: Don't want to burst your bubble about the DVD (it is a terrific teaching tool), however, when I enquired about using my DVD at ER hospital, they told me they a) didn't have time :) they didn't want a virus in their computers. I thought I would be clever and check out the DVD with them, so much for being clever. Doddie

depends on the hospital, the ER, and the staff....it may only have burst the bubble in your circumstance...not in all! Also, I'm pretty sure if they are at loose ends and all else has failed...they will look at the DVD!

Hi everyone. My name is Cheryl and I am booked for a consult about the lap band a week from Wednesday. It is very expensive, so it will take me some time to save up for it. Has anyone gone to Mexico for the surgery? If so can you share what your experience was and what about follow-up?

Hi Marcar: Don't let our experiences scare you. We are only telling so that others can be aware if they start to experience symptons and at least have some knowledge of what is happening and what to do. My port has flipped and I am going to be seen by Dr. Yau on June 14 and sugery on June 15. I live in North Vancouver, so I have the costs of flying to Toronto on uncomfortable planes and may have some large costs associated with the corrective procedure, BUT, know what? I would do it all over again in a shot. There are hundred that have no problems whatsoever. All I know, I am eating proper portions, I am not hungry, I have more energy every day that goes by. I am loosing very slowly on purpose. I am 63 and I want my skin to shrink back as much as possible. I guess my point is, your journey is your own, don't worry about others. Doddie.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
