Help needed please, and prayers

Recommended Posts

I am 6 weeks post op. Define for first couple weeks and started to go down hill. Been re admitted 2 additional hospital stays and 3 ER trips and one ambulance trip. My issue is that I cannot even tolerate Water let alone Protein or food. Living on about 6oz of water a day and no other nutrients. Surgeon has no idea, have done leak tests, upper gi scans, and blood work. What happens is even a sip of water feels like it wants to come back up. Starts with tightness in chest then esophagus and then I have to burp a few times or throw up. The nausea and chest discomfort from that sip can last minuets or hours. Since they are not sure what's wrong they sent me home with home health and am on iv fluids from 9p to 9a indefinitely. I'm so weak and malnourished that by tomorrow wants to start me on TPN iv. Which is full food nutrition thru iv 24hrs a day or possibly a feeding tube. So i am basically on a form of life support. No leaks or blockages were seen. They are puzzled. Am going to see another specialist. But was hoping someone here may have had a similar post op experience. Please help

Don't take this the wrong way but I work with children who have had severe reflux , feeding tubes , etc . When the issue has been resolved many children have mental aversion to what caused them issues in the first place usually OT will step in and work with them to get past it. Just a thought. Hope you feel better soon remember baby steps

Have you tried using a straw and drinking something you actually like? Surgeons tell you not to use a straw because it can cause gas, but if you don't find that it gives you a stomach ache, it's fine. I hated Water...I couldn't drink even close to what I was supposed to be getting. I tried flavored water and gatorage and without a straw it felt like I was swallowing rocks. About two weeks after surgery I got a pressed juice from Whole Foods, which comes with a straw and I totally forgot the no straw rule and had drank the entire thing, issue free, in about a half hour. From that point on I used straws to drink things I actually like to drink such as tea, gatorade, Water with lemon, and now that I'm further out diet sodas. When you're as bad off a you sound, liquid is liquid....forget the water, drink something you actually like, and try using a straw. I am 15 months out and I still can't drink without a straw because it still feels like the Fluid is a swallow of rocks going down my throat.

An esophageal hernia is not normal. Not today. Not ever. It is a known problem that you have and it seems quite obvious that it may in fact be the sole reason you aren't doing well.

I just don't understand your doctor's reasoning, so my prayer for you will be that you get a second opinion. Immediately. A GI specialist may also be able to help so don't just ask for a referral to another bariatric surgeon, ask for one to a gastroenterologist as well. I wish I could help more, but my gut says it's the hernia. Truly praying that this resolves soon enough. Hugs from afar......

I'm at a loss for words here. They've tried everything else but won't repair the hernia which is the only abnormal thing they can find? I too hope you get a second opinion. Something does not sound right about how they are addressing your issues.

Have they done a swallow study? It sounds like esophageal spasms.

My sister was very Ill like you after being sleeved. Ended up having a hematoma...the size of a football...pressing on her stomach forcing all liquid to be thrown up. Very serious...she had kidney failure....they put 2 drains in to reduce the size of the clot...then she got better. Been a year since her surgery she has lost 100 lbs and doing very well. I would ask if they can check and see if you are having the same issue...hope this helps. Prayers for you

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
