Feeding Your Family while you can't eat?

Recommended Posts

Getting ready for sleeve surgery Jan. 19th. There is just my husband and me in the home. How do you cook, etc. for the others in your house when you can't eat what they are eating? Is it hard to do and smell without going crazy? I'm worried about this. How have you all handled it. Any tips you can give me? Thanks!!

I cook for my daughter and what I do is eat my little meal first which is Soup or something small then make her dinner. Honestly you cant eat much anyway so even if you took a bite or 2 you will be full. I can only eat 2 tablespoons of anything then stuffed. So no temptation at all

It's just my 17 year old daughter and husband, they agreed to cook for themselves especially seafood which I don't like. Just for a few weeks and when my other kids come around I'll cook! It'll be hard at first. Surgery on the 30th.

I don't find it hard at all. I cook nutritious meals, low fat, and high flavor (have lots of spices). I cook the carbs separately so everyone else can add them to their plates based on their appetites. I might have a teeny amount, but the drive to eat the carbs is gone. Easy peezy.

@@Malibucruzer Let your husband cook for himself. I told my husband that he would be responsible for himself and the kids while on my two week pre-op diet. I stayed in my room while they ate. And guess what?! They didn't starve!!! And I made it through my two weeks of liquids without incident !

I've cooked for my husband and adult brother that lives with us throughout. Cooking is something I enjoy and while there were a couple of times it was difficult, most of the time it was OK. Now that I'm on pureed, I'm playing with flavors in my chicken and looking for a great healthy lowfat crustless quiche recipe for Christmas morning....my next step up from pureed. I know that what I'm cooking I'll be able to eat again in moderation so I don't look at it negatively.

If I would of planned this better I would of made some casseroles and froze them for the two week pre diet. Cause the first four days I was so hungry I felt like I could go Incredible Hulk over food. But tonight I made pulled pork and nachos and it didn't bother me. Oh and no cooking hungry! For me.

Thanks to all for your kind remarks and advice!! It's so encouraging to have someone to "share" with! I will make some things ahead to freeze - good idea. My husband is self-sufficient and I know he can fix himself something to eat. I just didn't want to completely dump him on his own! He is so good to me and so supportive, I want to be good to him, too! Looking forward to talking to you all in the future! Ruth

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
