Well meaning "advice" from our support group

Recommended Posts

This has nothing to do with BP. I get tons of support while I begin this journey. But today, I got a call from my 85 year old mother. She was against the surgery at first, but it grew on her, and she finally accepted the fact that I couldn't be talked out of it. So she gave up and decided to do some research. Now, my 85 year old mother has no computer, no internet. She has cable tv. So, she has been watching documentaries on WLS. She advised me that no one (NO ONE) has ever, or will ever succeed with their weight loss goals if they have the surgery. She told me that everyone gains it all back. She said she watched a show that had a man on his way home the day after surgery and stopped at a drive through and ate 3 big hamburgers, fries and a 64oz coke. I said..."Mom, that's tv. And if you want to do some research I will pick you up and we can go to a support group meeting together, and you can hear from "real" people and not tv people". She, declined, of course, because she knows it all now. She doesn't need to know anymore. I told her if she doesn't change her channel and watch something else, I'm calling the cable company and cancelling her service! HA! for crying out loud! REALLY??!!! I love my mom, but this really isn't helpful.

The proof is in the pudding - wait until she sees the new you. I had 15 ahem "well meaning" colleagues do a pre-surgery intervention to try and talk me out of it. I blew them off. Had annual conference last week, I'm down 40 pounds and feeling great. Everyone said, "well we were freakin wrong".

Oh my lord I want to know what kind of supposed WLS those ppl had if they could possibly eat that much food so soon after surgery they need to request a freakin refund just put that where it belongs some ppl will see or hear things and take it as the truth don't waste your energy trying to convince them otherwise simply prove them wrong! Good luck

@@wannaBthinsoon Bless her little heart! She's 85 just let her say her piece, the Important part is YOU know Better and that's all that really matters. You will just have to prove its possible to her! Real life is better than any TV programs she's going to watch!

That's an amazing WLS surgery that fellow got. 3 hamburgers, fries and a 64 oz drink on the way home from the hospital. My surgery went a little different. All I can eat is about 1/4 cup per meal and on my first day after surgery all I could drink was 1 oz every 15 minutes. Of course, I lost 48 lbs and I'm 7 weeks post surgery. Perhaps I need a refund. I want to eat 3 hamburgers, fries and a 64 oz drink and be morbid obese and miserable - NOT!

On the other hand, that guy probably didn't make it out of that restaurant alive. He blew up. What on earth, where do people get this info? Your poor mother.

Nobody. I know what happened, he was supposed to have surgery but chickened out at the last minute. To help him feel better from his epic blunder he stopped for a "snack" on the way home. Technically, he did eat all that on the way home from the hospital. Lol!

It is so sad that people don't seem to have anything better to do then come up with programing and information that's so wrong. But then, I'm sure they think the walk on the moon was a conspiracy. Some of those people need a shovel ready job, really! There are some highways in need of litter picking somewhere, I'm sure.

I would say something like "Mom, you know reality tv isn't exactly "real", right?" along with a sideways look.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
