Struggling to stick with diet to get a VSG date

Recommended Posts

So when I went to the doctor earlier this month it was hinted that if I lost 14pds I would get a surgery date. My next doctor appt is Dec 29th so naturally I want to lose the weight by then. So far I've lost only 5 pounds. So I have 9 pounds to go in 2 weeks. I've decided to do a Protein Shake for Breakfast and lunch with a sensible dinner. Today was my first day on the diet and I failed miserably. I went on a total binge, fried chicken and cookies..I think I'm just so stressed by the whole thing that I sabotage myself. Any tips or thoughts on how I can move forward would be extremely helpful.

I remember how hard the pre-op diet was and I only had to do it for 1 week! It was so much harder dealing with the mental hunger - harder than anything I dealt with post-op.

What gave me the ability to lose 10 lbs in 7 days was eating almost no carbs. I drank low-carb Protein shakes and when I just had to have some real food, I only ate pork loin or chicken breast. It's tough to get past those carb cravings, but after 2 or 3 days they go away. If you have to have something sweet, try sugar free Jell-O or sugar free Popsicles.

Wishing you the good luck.

This won't be a popular opinion, but if you binge after half a day on a sensible diet, you may want to consider that you might not be ready for such a drastic change to your life. This is going to require long term commitment and binges cannot happen. You will risk all sorts of complications post op if you don't take it very seriously. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer, but I want you to truly consider what the ramifications will be for you long term if you can't get your mind around how to use your tool to help you. It's not magic and you can easily gain or not lose at all after surgery if you don't settle some food issues. I say this with all the love in the world!

I binged because having a Protein Shake for breakfast and lunch basically put me in starvation mode. I always stop eating when i am full. Having the surgery will help me be full faster and help me eat less. Yes I did have a slip up today but I'm an extremely determined person.. To be honest I don't think you can judge my readiness for surgery based on my one little comment.

You asked for thoughts and tips. You got them ;) Nobody is judging you, sweetheart. Relax a little. No reason to be defensive, I'm just being honest.

Your entire comment was judgmental. By bascially telling me that I can't handle a 'sensible' diet and telling me about my mindset. You don't know me or my journey. I had a slip up and wanted thoughts and tips on how I could modify my diet. Not to be schooled on the outcomes of surgery. As if i just woke up and thought this surgery was the magic pill.

Wow. Someone is a grumpy cat. Have a nice night, dear. You clearly don't want help, you only want justification. I can't help with that, but maybe someone else will. Best of luck on your journey!

Thanks! If I'm ever looking for a stranger to judge me I know who to write. Goodnight, Hun!

Im right where you are buddy. I had a weigh in yesterday and did not lose the required 10 lbs. I lost 8 what a huge disappointment. All I did was eat sugar free Jello,, exercise, and Water. I know exactly how you feel. I need a buddy. I started all over again of course I sabotoaged it by eating all kinds of stuff sunday and yesterday.

Pleae we got to stick in there because we made this decision to change our lives and by golly we gotta do it.

Heres what I did I bought a bunch of progresso light Soups (70 calories) and the sugar free Jello (10 and 5 calories) ate them and drank lots of Water. I did just like you though sabotaged it by eating fried chicken and Cookies. SO I am starting all over again and have been given a date to return back to the doc on Jan 5. My surgery was scheduled for December 18th an huge disappointment on my behalf. But it was tremendously hard to do. Along with exercising because I was told to walk, walk, walk, walk, so I got on that treadmill and walkded for at least 40 minutes everyday. I worked. So if you want a buddy I'm here. COME ON WE CAN DO THIS.

We were told in the beginning of the process that this is a life style change and by golly it is, SO suck it up and let's do it.

I'm in the same boat. I have an appointment on Monday morning with my NUT and I HAVE to show some weight loss to be submitted to the insurance company for approval. I am desperate to do it so I am skipping dinner for a Protein shake at 4:30 and another one at 6:30. Starting Friday I'm going to do 6 shakes a day and no food. My shakes have 150 calories per shake so that is 900 calories for the day. I consider it a trial run for my pre-op diet. I don't think 3 shakes a day is enough. I will get to hungry and will eat anything in sight. If will power alone could do it I would not need the surgery.

I like the 6 shakes idea. 3 shakes at this point is just not enough

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
