Does your medicine go down?

Recommended Posts

I am scheduled to be banded on July 12. The closer it gets, the more little questions I have. Many have been answered here. But here is my question for the day. I have to take lots of medicines for varied medical problems. Between my blood pressure meds, dilantin, waterpills, and ashma pill, I take lots twice a day. Will it be a problem getting them down? Hopefully, someday as I lose weight I can get off of some of them. But I know that day will be down the road as I have 200 pounds to lose. Any experiences that you want to share would be appreciated. Thanks, Patti C

You'll have to crush your pills or get them in liquid or chewable forms. You may want to contact the doc's that prescribed the medications and let them know this, so they can adjust your prescripts accordingly.

Best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery :)

Hi Patti,

This is one of the reasons you want to stay in very close touch with your PCP and any other doctors as you proceed with weight loss. Some medications are sensitive to weight and others aren't; also, some might have to be adjusted as your conditions change and your health improves.

As for getting them down, that usually isn't a problem until you have really good restriction, and only then is it an issue with larger pills. Check with your doc about alternatives like liquids, chewables, things that can be opened or crushed, or cut in half. Not all medications can safely be altered, so PLEASE as your doctor before making any assumptions.

I use to have to crush one of my pills but I no longer have to. The size of an M&M goes down fine. Just make sure you check with the pharmacist before you crush your meds to make sure you can. Good luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
