Packing Bag for Hospital

Recommended Posts

Many people have different advice when it comes to this topic, but I'll be staying in the hospital after my sleeve for 2 days and I've started to pack my bag. Other than the items listed below, can anyone suggest anything further? Thanks!

  • Comfy sweat pants
  • slippers
  • iPad
  • books
  • cell phone charger
  • flushable wipes
  • gas-x strips
  • tampons (just in case)
  • yoga bras
  • Shampoo, soap
  • toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Big hoodie for the drive home

If you are going to the hospital in the US I don't think you need to bring wipes, Gas-x or slippers. They will provide those things. I also wore the same thing home I came to the hospital in. I just bought a large pair of panties so nothing chafed my incisions. Colace (stool softener) and omeprazole (prilosec) was started in the hospital and was given to me daily.

I WAY overpacked for my hospital stay (thought it would be 2 nights, ended up only 1). Pretty much everything I needed except my phone and charger were supplied (lip balm, mouthwash, slipper socks, gown). But bring along lip balm and Biotene mouthwash just in case - your mouth will definitely be dry. One note about tampons, they probably won't let you use them - must use pads after surgery. I brought a change of underwear and wore home the clothes I wore in, so just make sure everything is loose and nonbinding.

@@BLERDgirl @ldg You both make a good point about bringing things that the hospital already will supply. I don't want to over pack.

And does the hospital supply some sort of underwear to wear while there? It may be a stupid question, but I've never had an overnight stay in the hospital before.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
