Scars are red and itchy

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

My surgery was November 19. My scars look like they are healing well. I never had stitches or anything, just some clear glue covering them that I could peel off after day 5.

Anyway, the scars are red all around them, especially the one by by belly button. And they're so itchy! Is this normal? I'm sure the itchyness means they're healing, but the redness is kinda worrying me. Did this happen to other people? Is there something I can do to prevent this?

Yep itchy= healing. As long as they don't feel warm to the touch or have any drainage, puss then you should be ok!

Mine are very itchy too and I can see on the side of the steri strips that it is red. My doc also said if they get a bad smell that could mean an infection.

This!!

Mine itched like crazy!!! My belly button incision took the longest to heal. My other four are so tiny and look really good now. Still itch once in awhile but nothing like the in the beginning!!

I didn't put anything on them. Just itched around them. Some days were worse than others but really not that bad.

I also had mine in nov. The 18th. My incisions got really rashed out red circles around them and itched like crazy. My surgeon removed the surgical glue because he felt it was probably an allergic reaction to either that or the dissolvable stitches inside the incision. It took about another week and then cleared up.

Mine were itchy as well. I also had "glue", (which is the best IMHO if you're not allergic. Just much cleaner and no dirty steristrips hanging on for weeks). Funny thing is even more than a year out they itch sometimes. Just a scar tissue thing, I guess.

I went back to my surgeon yesterday and he said the redness was confusing. Lol. He didn't know what it was from. He gave me an antibiotic just in case it was infected, and some hydrocortisone cream which has already started helping ????

My incisions became red and itchy on post op day 2. They were really red! I thought I was going to get septic and panicked. My WBCs were fine. My doc said it was probably a reaction to the glue, but they were healing ok. If your incisions are warm with drainage, you may have an infection. The warmth is the key. Also, if u are infected, u may have a fever unless you are taking pain medications with Tylenol, which would suppress the fever. You should notify your Doc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
