Michelle Anne 4 Posted December 14, 2014 Did you start from day one with low carb or during the phases did you just eat what you could and switch to low carb high Protein once you were able to eat anything??
cdenney123 103 Posted December 15, 2014 I have not had carbs because I eat so little I want just Protein... Also I did try to eat a cracker with my Soup and it just got stuck in my throat I felt like. I also think carbs are necessary for a diet but I have them through liquids like milk or Protein shakes.. kikicoates78 220 Posted December 15, 2014 I cut almost all bad carbs and starches.
Elode 8,093 Posted December 15, 2014 I started with as much Protein as I could comfortably Handel and now 6 weeks later I'm still all protein rich foods. My carbs are extremely low maybe 15 a day. I don't eat anything that doesn't have protein in it ..at all.
SuperDave 1,115 Posted December 15, 2014 Same here. High Protein low carb from the beginning. I'm satisfied with what I eat now, so no need to add in something that is not going to help.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) I didn't do anything fancy. I just stopped eating simple, processed carbs aka "white carbs". So no Pasta, no breads, sweet potatoes instead of white. That sort of thing. I don't mind if I get carbs from veggies and fruits although I still make Protein my first priority. Quest4TheNewMe 225 Posted December 15, 2014 I went low carb about 4 months pre-op and haven't looked back since.
LumpySpacePrincess 594 Posted December 15, 2014 Protein and Produce before Carbs and Crap is what my surgeon has always told me. I don't "do" low-carb per-se, but my diet is naturally low in starches and grains because I eat all my Protein first, then my veggies, and then IF I have room (usually don't) I can eat a bit of starch. I must note, however, that I didn't even start introducing starches/high glycemic carbs back into my diet until I'd lost about 75% of my excess weight, and then it was a gradual process. I've had great success in just a year with this way of eating.
Michelle Anne 4 Posted December 15, 2014 I was just asking because my doctor seems to have a very different diet than most. I started my week 4 food that is allowed and it all seems to be carbs. I want to try something new but I really want to avoid carbs..
Kindle 8,667 Posted December 15, 2014 (edited) I was almost all Protein with some fat (mostly from dairy) and non-starchy veggies from the very beginning. I added in more fruit and whole grains as I got close to goal, about 6 months out. No white carbs (bread, Pasta, rice, sugar) until I was at goal, and even then only 3-4 times/month. I'm not particularly "low carb" now that I'm in maintenance, but my carbs are coming from fruits veggies and whole grains. I never had a plan from my surgeon that involved calories or carb count or specific foods....just made smart, healthy choices....pretty easy plan. So what is he telling you to eat? The first couple months is actually the most crucial time to get in Protein to help with healing and hairloss. Edited December 15, 2014 by Kindle
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 15, 2014 @@Michelle Anne - what 4 foods are you allowed?
Michelle Anne 4 Posted December 15, 2014 I can have the stuff from the last two weeks which includes yogurt, cottage cheese, oatmeal, scrambled eggs, tuna, crackers, toast, mashed potatoes, soft cooked Pasta, flaky fish, soft fruit, soft cooked vegetables, hummus, Beans and legumes and Soup as long as I drain all the broth... I always pick the eggs, tuna, cottage cheese because they are high Protein but I thought it was weird that I could have pasta already.. And honestly there are a lot of carbs listed in what I'm allowed to have right now..
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted December 15, 2014 My surgeon's plan requires low carb from day one, so that's what I did. No grains, no potatoes, no peas, no refined sugar, etc.
BLERDgirl 6,417 Posted December 15, 2014 My doctor hasn't said anything about crackers or toast, but I woudn't eat them anyway because they carbs and low on the list after Protein then veg. I'm allowed oatmeal, but so far I've only had it twice. I made it using a premixed Protein Drink instead of milk and it was fine. I'm allowed mashed potatoes, but I haven't had them because it just didn't seem helpful to me. I don't worry about the carbs in Beans, fruit or veg. It's just the carbs in crackers, toast, Pasta & potatoes I avoid. The rest of your list sounds fine.
