Kidney Stones after Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

I am one month out and suddenly have kidney stones! I have never had them before. I can't help but wonder if this is related to the surgery. Anyone else develop kidney stones after their surgery?

I have heard that one of the side effects can be kidney stones. It is one of the reasons why you are supposed to be drinking so many fluids. Have you chatted with your surgical team about it? They might be able to tell u if there is something you need to be doing with your diet to help.

I heard of this, but so far have not had them. Also heard of gallstones. I don't know what the cause is. How do you get rid of them?

I had several kidney stones a few months after, they are intense! a Urologists told me to stop taking the Calcium supplement I began taking as part of my Lap Band regimine. I have family history of osteoperosis and its common for doctors to advise us LB's to take a good Vitamin and Calcium supplement to offset are new diet. Turns out my calcium levels didn't need the extra help. I sympathize with you!

I had a 4.5mm stone that messed me up pretty well for a few days and surgery to remove/repair. It was caused be (according to the urologist) the Calcium supplements. Needless to say, haven't taken one since. blood tests are alright without them...

I'm 6 days post op gb and just seen my Doctor. He said I may have kidney stones so I may have to do a cat scan.

I'm in the process of finding out what is causing my kidney stones. It started with a trip to the ER back on March 29th. I was misdiagnosed as having a bladder infection. I had no symptoms of a bladder infection but the ER doc was convinced even tho he told me that the only time he'd seen those symptoms was with chemo, radiation, or cancer. He proceeded to hand me a prescription foe antibiotics and sent me home.

After a week of no improvement, I made an appointment at the teaching hospital where I had my RNY. First thing was to rule out an infection as the ER doc didn't do a urine culture. It was , of course, negative.

Then came the CT scan that showed a 6 mm stone in my ureter and another in my kidney. I had surgery to remove the stones this past Tuesday and the Urologist found several more stones tucked behind the one in my kidney.

I know that the stones aren't caused by my Calcium supplements as I've not been put on them as my calcium levels have been above normal since before my RNY. At my last post-op visit, my Vitamin D had taken a huge leap up also. I have my 6 month checkup in June, so it will be interesting to see what my levels are then if the Urologist hasn't figured things out by then.

Prior to all this, I had no idea that kidney stones could be a side effect of RNY.

Yep, I had 2 extremely painful episodes of kidney stones after my lapband from not drinking enough. I had a revision on 4/23 and I'm really struggling with Fluid, definitely worried I could end up with them again! It's the worst pain ever !!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
