Meeting protein goals; Will I still have hair loss?

Recommended Posts

I am five days post-op and have been able to meet my 60-90grams of Protein every day (I feel lucky!). I was wondering if you can still experience Hair loss even when you meet or exceed your protein goals?

Everyone is different. Some people experience hair loss and others don't. It's said that not getting enough Protein can cause Hair loss, but there are other factors such as age, genetics and hormones that also come into play.

I did not lose hair except for a few strays around the house. Many people absolutely suffer with devastating Hair loss. I take 80 g Protein, 80 ounces Water, 20,000 mg Biotin (that's a lot), calories 800-1200. There is no accounting for the dynamics behind the hair loss except that your body has to prioritize its resources after surgery. Just prepare for the worst and hope for the best.

Only time will tell unfortunately. It's a small price to pay though and it will grow back! Hopefully your smaller waist line Will not! Don't stress!

I hit my Protein goals every day starting the day after surgery and I still lost hair. I also took my Biotin, Iron, zinc, B12, all that good stuff, starting well before surgery even. I really think it's more a matter of luck than anything else. Hair loss is no fun but neither is being morbidly obese . . . I would have had this surgery if it made me permanently bald!

Unfortunately it is still possible to have hair loss. Hair loss is a side effect of the trauma of surgery.

I read that hair has 3 phases - growth, existing hair, and the hair that is about to fall out. After a major trauma, the body shifts all it's resources to repair and healing. The result is the new Hair growth is slowed, and the cycle of hair replacement is out of whack. So there's no replacements for existing hair and the hair that was ready to fall out. But things get back in sync as healing gets near complete.

My hair thinned considerably, but my hair has always been thick. And I really only notice my hair thinning because I didn't need to go to my barber for an extra month. So I was the only person that noticed my hair loss. I knew going in that I might lose my hair, but I figured it was a small price to pay in the long run.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
