I think the idea is if the doctor catches early they have you work on reducing it through diet before surgery. Speak with your doctor about your concerns and go from there.

Being open and honest with your dr about previous eating habits and such are key. My dr also has been known turn people away if he finds a fatty liver. With the sleeve surgery they actually go under the liver to snip away the part of your tummy. With that being said it is the main reason my dr requires the 2wk clear liquid prior to surgery to "shrink" the liver as much as possible prior to surgery. This in turn reduces the risk of any complications. It's a precaution he takes to reduce the risk of nicking or causing harm to the liver.

That's how it was explained to me.
