The Question All Newbies Want Answered! :-P

Recommended Posts

I've been meaning to post photo evidence of how much I drink with a meal, but somehow always forgot to take a picture. So here it is:

How much do you drink with meals?

I'm 2 years post-sleeve and the amount I'm drinking with my meals has been the same since I started eating regular foods - 30 days post-op.

The first few weeks after surgery were the hardest to adjust to.

I wanted to take a big swallows of Water with my food (as I was accustomed to doing) but forced myself to take sips that were just enough to wet my tongue. Eventually I got into the habit and don't really have to pay attention to my sipping anymore. It's all automatic now.

Last night I ate Mexican food and was served a glass of water that must have held 20ozs. It was a big glass.

Theres a white opaque design on the glass and the water was filled to the top of that design.

The photo was taken after the meal and hopefully you can see how far the water level is below the top of the white design (on the inside of the glass).

I drank less than 2 oz with my meal over the course of an hour.

I don't drink during meals. I was told to wait 30 minutes after drinking to eat and to wait 30 minutes after eating to drink. I have actually found that I can eat comfortably within 10 to 15 minutes of drinking. But I need at least 45 minutes after eating to be able to drink.

Yeah I was told no drinking 30 mins before no drinking during and no drinking till 30 mins after eating. I do pretty good at this unless I feel something is stuck... but if something is stuck and I drink it a lot of the time results in me purging which deals with the stuck item... If I find what i have eaten my sleeve doesn't "feel" right i will have a small drink (sip) and within a few minutes the feeling passes. But as a normal rule i don't drink till quite a while after.

If I have something spicy then I may have a sip to rinse out my mouth a bit, but no refreshing drinks until my 30 minutes have passed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
