What's your pre-op diet consist of?/Can I cook my veggies?

Recommended Posts

Mine is basically a "slim fast" diet where I have to drink two shakes and have a salad daily. I wonder if it would be ok to cook the veggies instead. Sauteed spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, zucchini, etc. It'd be nice to be able to just for the variation. Anyone try this?

I was only allowed liquids....up to 5 low carb Protein drinks per day, broth, Water, Vitamin Water Zero.....that's it, no salad.

Does your plan specifically say salad or does it say veggies? If you can have zucchini, spinach, etc. then I can't see any reason why you couldn't cook them...steamed with no butter of course.

It says the shakes and salad for the first week. They give an example of a salad and it lists a bunch of different veggies so I figured, why not heat them up. LOL

PRE-OP PREPARATION

14 Days Prior to Surgery

Do not smoke.

Follow Pre-Op Diet below:

Use any premixed canned or powdered Protein drink that contains at least 15 grams of Protein. You may purchase these in any health food store or many grocery stores. Wal-Mart EAS pre mix is excellent for pre op but BIO CHEM is great powder for after surgery.

Breakfast: 1 Protein Drink

Lunch: 1 Protein Drink

Dinner: salad with Protein 6 oz for women…8 oz for men (chicken, fish, egg, etc.), small amount of low-fat or fat-free dressing, or olive oil and vinegar.

Evening Snack: 1 protein drink (if needed).

You may also take 1 Metamucil capsule per day for hunger (if needed).

SAMPLE SALAD: 2 cups spinach, 1/2 zucchini, 1/4 cauliflower, 1/2 summer squash, 1 Tomato, 4 green onions, 1/2 cucumber, 1 egg, 1/2 cup rinsed canned kidney Beans, 1/4 each red, green, yellow and orange pepper. Maybe even some sprouts. Topped with the chicken and your favorite dressing and split into thirds.
This method is okay also… A shake in the morning...1/3 of the salad around 11, 1/3 around 1.30 and the last around 4 pm with the shake at 6.30 pm and if needed one more shake later.

7 Days Prior to Surgery

Discontinue Vitamins, Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Advil, Nuprin, Aleve or any other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication. This includes baby aspirin and most arthritis medications. These medications can cause unnecessary bleeding after surgery. (If you are not sure, please check with our doctors.)

For headache or minor pains you may use Tylenol.

Do not take any herbal medications/remedies.

3 Days Prior to Surgery

Consume only Clear Liquids, i.e.; broth. Don’t be afraid to add a little Poultry Seasoning to your warm chicken broth or some Curry powder.< /span> Jell-O, sugar-free juice, and popsicles after that.

When it comes to the last three days, this includes the day of surgery...first day take a laxative and have chicken broth with curry paste for flavoring, natural sugar free apple, cranberry or grape juice, crystal light, MiO, and sugar free Jell-o and popsicles. AS MUCH OF THESE AS YOU NEED AND WANT...

Just Prior to Surgery / Day of Surgery

Absolutely nothing to drink after the midnight preceding surgery or 8 hours prior to your surgery.

Absolutely NO medications unless directed by the doctor. (If you have been pre-approved to take any medications by your doctor leading up to surgery, you may take small sips of Water for swallowing.)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
