Pre-op Diet: How much/steadily to lose?

How much is everyone losing/has everyone lost on the pre-op diet?

I am in this bad habit of weighing myself every day so my perspective on this is slightly skewed. For the first several days I was dropping weight like nobody's business. But for the past two days, the weight hasn't budged at all.

I wouldn't be concerned, but since the beginning of October, I've been dropping weight very rapidly on diet/exercise. Now with the pre-op diet I am only 1 pound away from 70 pounds lost! Is it possible that post-surgery I won't lose initially because of hitting a pre-surgery plateau? Not saying 2 days of no loss is a plateau. I'm clearly just panicking here, but I do wonder if it's happened to anyone else. 70 pounds is a lot to lose in just 9-10 weeks. Maybe my body is deciding that 5 days before surgery it's just gonna take a break from losing weight for a while? :lol:

70 pounds is a HUGE amount to lose especially before surgery. Congrats! Your body may just be taking a break. Stalls are normal postop, I don't see why they wouldn't be even preop when you're dropping so much weight so fast. And yes, it's very likely you won't lose quite as fast postop.

As for me, I was only required to lose 12 pounds on my 2 week preop diet. I ended up losing 22. But then it took me 7 weeks to lose another 17 postop and 3 months to lose 30. You may want to reconsider the weighing everyday thing, in case the slower loss upsets you. I only weighed at the doctor's office for the first 4 months, then I started weighing weekly at work. Don't even own a scale. But slow initial losses and not weighing myself did not stop me from reaching and even passing my goals.

You will do great....it's all about attitude and eating right.

Great job with getting your weight off before surgery.

Try not to fret about the scale not moving for two days, I know easier said than done.

I only had to do a one week post op diet and it included two Protein shakes a day and one small meal of 3oz of Protein, a small salad and piece of fruit daily. I lost 9lbs.

70lb is awesome. To answer your question I lost 12 lbs on my pre-op two week diet.

@@Kindle You're right. I am probably going to weigh myself every Wednesday instead of every day after surgery, but after two solid months of almost daily movement on the scale, I am kind of addicted to getting on every morning and patting myself on the back. Probably not the healthiest thing in the world. I know all about stalls so I don't think that will bother me post-surgery, but just to be safe I definitely should cut out the daily weigh-ins!

Don't worry about it. I'm on pre op liquid day 10 and I dropped 8 lbs within the first 3 days. Now I'm going up 1 one day and down 1 the next. It doesn't make a hill of Beans difference to me because logically I KNOW I cannot gain FAT from being on these low calories. I see people stressing out post op because they aren't losing "fast enough" and I just SMH. It will come off eventually. It HAS TO if you're following the rules. Here's one way to think about it. Suppose someone told me that I need to run AS FAST AS I CAN for 2 miles. Well, I'm not in the best shape, so I might take off fast right out of the gate, but pretty soon I'm going to need to STOP and rest for a little bit. Then, I can get going again. Maybe not as fast as I did at the start, but I'm still moving. And guess what? I'm going to need to rest again soon. Your body is doing the same thing. Don't be mad at it for needing to chill out and take a breather for a minute. We never see what's going on on the inside. Your cells and muscles and metabolic response is doing everything it can to keep up with the demands that you've imposed on it. Trust the process. It works.

@@bobbyswife that's a great analogy! I might be using it, because posts that whine about stalls and slow weight loss make me crazy! (Especially when they aren't posted in the "Don't Sweat the Stall Stuff" where they belong!)

Wow! 70 pounds lost! You are just Awesome! This is my 11th day on the official "PreOp" diet. I've lost about 6 pounds. I had already lost 50 or so on my own, eating a low calorie diet. So I think my body isn't too shocked by another low calorie diet. :)

Thank you! Not too shabby yourself. I have a LOT to lose so while the pounds lost is pretty high for me your percent lost is probably higher! High five!

I was thinking the same thing, actually. For many the pre-op diet is probably a sharper shock to the system than for me because I've already cut my daily calorie intake by half or more. I had another loss this morning, so obviously I was worried for nothing. But it would be kind of funny to hit a diet plateau just a few days before surgery. Not funny, haha. Funny coincidence.

Thanks! I was totally thinking the same thing, Plateauing right into surgery...but so far nope. It seems I go a few days fluctuating within 3 lbs of the same weight, then see a loss. This was seriously frustrating in the beginning, but I'm learning to accept my body's reactions and stop stressing over the numbers. I'm hoping & praying you get approved! Your head is obviously in the right place, so don't see why insurance wouldn't approve you!!!

@@ProjectMe Oh I am approved! I am having surgery the day after you it seems! I was approved 2 weeks before surgery. It's been a whirlwind!

When you have a lot to lose, the initial loss will be fast. I am on my pre-op diet now and I have lost 30 lbs in less than a month. I also weigh myself every day and I experience occasional plateaus. Consider what you have eaten or drank, high sodium makes me stall by holding on to Water. Otherwise, follow your protocol and let your body do what it needs to do..

        Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

      Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

        Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
