Hi there!!

Well After two denials I was finally approved today for surgery. I am scheduled for jan 7th. I am very interested in any of you that have young kids. I have a two year old lil girl who stays home with me. My husband works full time and I'm so concerned about Not being able to pick her up!! Can anyone tell me how they felt the first day sec day.... ?

How long will I need help for? I know what the dr says but I would like to know real life details. Anything can help?

Well, I may not be typical, but I had a relatively pain free experience. My surgery was Tuesday 14 Oct 14 at 0800, I left the hospital around noon on Thursday. I had some gas pain in the hospital, which is quite painful, but by the time I went home, with no pain medication, I was fine. I returned to work 1 week later feeling really good. I started walking the day I came home from the hospital. My surgeon has a twenty five pound weight restriction until 4 weeks, but I think my purse weighs more than that and I had no problem carrying that. You will read some horror stories on here, but a lot of us had a really easy time of it too! Also, I have only thrown up once and that was from Multivitamins, and no dumping at all. Good luck and please let us know how you are doing!

I had a positive experience as well however I did find myself quite tired in those first couple of weeks. Especially the first week if you are on strictly Clear Liquids. I found that until I was allowed to move to full liquids which included Protein Drinks I felt a bit weak. Once I was allowed full liquids which was one week post op the. I started to have more energy. I would understand the type of diet your doc has you on. It seems some people go home on full liquids vs. clear and maybe they don't get that.

I wasn't allowed to lift more than 10 pounds for ten weeks after surgery.

I had my surgery in July, I have several little kids at home who always need me for something. My surgery went very well, as did recovery. I never really picked up my 2 and year old immediately after surgery. I would always sit down first and then they would crawl up in my lap for mommy time. They were also my best napping buddies! I was really tired for the first couple of weeks. I tested as much as possible. Due to my husband work schedule, I pretty much resumed my normal activities as mom during that first week. If you have help, that's awesome, but if not...it's manageable.

I had to stay in the hospital 3 extra days, with horrible gas pain, throwing up blood, foam, and then choking in my sleep. I went home and my mom stayed a week to help with my 2 and 5 year olds. Thank god she did, it would have been brutal for me. Between being exhausted and getting used to the new eating patterns, being in pain and tired to the point of immobility I really need her help.

You never know how your going to react and you should try and have someone lined up for the first week to help. Your having major surgery and you deserve to take your time and rest.

The kids were nervous about how pale I've been and all the cuts on my belly and it would have been hard for them to see me struggling to care for them as well.

My doctor said no lifting over 20 lbs

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
