Hi All,

I am knew to this site. Back in 2001 i had gastric bypass. I lost 140 lbs but thru the years i slowly gain the weight back. Now 13 years later I am back up to my original pre surgery weight. I am know looking into have a WLS revision. I have gone for my first visit with Dr. Nusbaum. He as well as his staff were amazing. He has given me two options to consider before he does my EGD to see what he is working with.

So my two choices are Lap Band or Plication. I heard many things about Lap Band. My question is has anyone had a Plication surgery? How are you feeling post surgery. What are the weight loss outcomes compared to doing the Lap Band?

Trying to get informed before I sit down with my doctor again. I have my EGD on January 14, 2015

I don't know anything about revisions after bypass, but just wanted to welcome you to the site!

I think you need to revisit what led the gastric bypass to be a failure in the 1st place. The tool you've received is still there, giving you both restriction and malabsorption. In my opinion, you shouldn't consider any additional surgery.

I agree with Beaglelover. Since bypass statistically has better weightloss results than either Lapband or plication, what is your doctor expecting to accomplish by giving you a "less successful" revision (no offense to banders or plication patients, I'm just speaking statistically). In the end, it's your lifestyle choices that make or break any WLS. Have you been able to assess what caused your weight regain? Is there an actual medical or physiological reason or is it more due to eating habits, lack of exercise, etc.? Whatever it is, that's what you need to focus on changing, not necessarily another surgery.

As for plication, there is a plication forum on here you could check out. But it has only been performed in the US for a couple years, so you will not find any long term success/complication rates.

No one is doing lap band anymore... Because it isn't a successful tool, I don't think there are even studies on someone having Gastric Bypass, gaining back then doing Lap band. I agree with the other posts about looking aft the root cause for the right gain. I am sorry you have gone through this. I had Lap Band and was successful with weight Loss when I followed the plan, however I experienced ongoing reflux and regurgitation of mucus and recurrent nausea. I gained 3/4 of my weight loss back in the next year because I could not tolerate most vegetables, fruit & meat. My revision with Gastric bypass has not been w/o complications, same symptoms this time, able to eat a couple small bites of chicken, another meal a half a cup of refried Beans, and about 4 tortilla chips. I was able to eat a 1/2 c. Of mashed potatoes mixed with stuffing, a small piece of Turkey white meat, eaten over an hour. It takes me all morning to get my 8 oz Protein Drink down. It has now been 11 weeks. I've had 2 endoscope which were normal. I've now gone from 246# to 182, back up to 226, back to 212 prior to revision and now 169.6. Every weight loss method takes work. Unfortunately!

There are lots of people who've had "Band over Bypass" and "Band over Sleeve"....AND vice versa... so listen to the medical professionals.

There are several people who are active on here who got plication when they had their bands placed, and have done fantastic! Some haven't even needed to adjust (fill) thier band post op....for years.

I haven't heard of anyone going to plication after bypass, but I'm sure your surgeon wouldn't be suggesting it without some EXPERT knowledge of its success rates.

And welcome to the forum! I think you'll find most people here non-judgemental about your regaining and seeking more help via a revision. We all needed help to control our eating....some are so quick to forget that.

I wish you much success in whatever you and your surgeon decide is best for you! :)

I believe had my band with plication it seems that is an adjunct to Bariatric surgery. I think all of us have struggled with our weight for years, finding the best mode is illusive and not always successful. I hope that everyone finds a successful w/o suffering side effects. The only thing that I like about my gastric bypass is that I no longer feel hunger, and I'm almost at goal weight. I hope that keep it off.

Thanks for the link. I wonder if there's been any other studies to see if revisions are successful for people that had a "successful" bypass, but then gained their weight back.

Your not alone, I myself have just recently had WLS but my mom in law has had a gastric bypass in 2005 and has had a complete failure and is now in search of what her cause was to regain and + weight... She has little to none restriction and we wonder if it was the type of surgery that was performed at that time... She was never educated on nutrition and exercise, she was just thrown into a surgery she was not prepared for...

Just a follow up. I am now 4 months into the process of trying to have a revision WLS. My doctor has recommend I have a Lap Band done after getting the results for my endo. The visits with the nutritionist have been going well. My doctor has submitted my info to my issue carrier BCBS to get approval. They came back with they wanted more information from my prior surgery as well as receipt from any diet I have tried. I just submitted receipt and am waiting for my prior doctor to fax over my records to my current doctor. Once that is done they will be resubmitting soon. I should know more by next week. Crossing my fingers BCBS approves everything.

I had gastric bypass in 1982 and lost 120#. I gained back about 40# over 20 years but within the last 3-4 years I gained back 70#. I realized I was hungry all the time. I was able to eat steak, raw vegetables(that is a good thing) and drink with meals. I researched this and found out that the outlet stretches and food goes through faster. There's a new procedure that can be done through an endoscope that sutures the outlet back smaller and fix the pouch if necessary. Of course like my gastric bypass it is only a tool to successful long term weight loss.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
