Getting ready for surgery dec 17

Recommended Posts

Ok guys I am having my band removed and possible revision to rny depending on how my inside looks. I am super nervous. Dr put me on liquids stage 2 basically I am eating Soups and Protein Shakes ... Is it normal to be second guessing your decision? Having bad thoughts ?? Any support will help. Thanks

I had my band removed and rny in September. I kept second guessing my decision to have the RNY. I really wanted the sleeve but decided I needed the malabsorption to keep me on track. The first week was rough but otherwise I haven't had any problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I am losing a bit slower than normal RNY patients but I'm very happy with my results.

Good luck

Congrats, my surgery is Dec. 18th, and I'm right there with ya. It's also not helping that everyone I speak with about it are being serious Debbie Downers with the stories of "oh, I new a lady who had a horrible time with that", and "oh, I have heard about people dying from that". I'm tired of defending my well researched decision. On top of that, I'm also a Nurse, so I have a very candid knowledge of all aspects of this surgery, and aftercare. The most crapy thing I have been told, is that "it's a really selfish decision" to do this. I really wasn't having any second thoughts until recently, but I think I just need to get these people out of my head....lol. The liquid diet is bad enough all on it's own, without dealing with doubters.

@costalchick don't even listen to the Debbie downers they have no idea what we go through on a daily basis. And people who even tell me "oh I heard this or oh I heard that " do to even know what it feels like to be overweight and have knee pain. That's why I pick and choose who I want to tell. I am super nervous having second thoughts but I spoke to a friend of my cousins who had the surgery 10 years ago and said it was the best thing she did and even though her family was supportive she said they made her write a goodbye letter to her son!! She's laughing about it now. She Said second guessing your decision is normal and she had the same thoughts but everything will turn our ok. So I am keeping positive and focused on my liquids until the next 6 days I want this day to come and pass quickly and be done and over with already. One thing I am nervous and anxious is if my dr will actually do the rny.. Since I have a band he needs to remove he has to see how much scar tissue I have. So he said if I have too much he will just remove my band and let my stomach heal for 6 months ... But I am keeping my fingers crossed because I want this done at once I don't want to have to go through all this nervousness again. Even though he doesn't sound too positive I know it is better to under promise than over promise so I am keeping positive. Good luck to you and keep me posted !!

Hi Krisstep,

This is my first post on here but I'm glad that I read yours. I'm also having my RYGB on 12/17 and I am also struggling with doubts. I'm glad I'm not the only one and I kind of figured I wasn't. I had a talk with my 13 year old son this morning and he helped me see that it's definitely the right decision. I'm amazed at the talks I have with that boy. But anyway, I hope that you're able to get everything done at one time and you can get on the path that you want to be on.

I'll be right there with you on Wednesday! Good Luck!!

Mike

Hi Mike, definitely you are not alone. I feeling all sorts of emotions right now. Mainly worried about my children, but I am doing this for them and to set good healthy examples for my children and to be able to do things with them that I can't do now. I know everything will turn out okay it's just that little voices that are bothering me and I have decided not to listen to them because I know what I am doing is for the better. Keep your head up and smile my friend we are all in this together. We are in it to win it!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
