Once your have healed, how much manual labor can you do?

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks,

Long time reader, first time poster. I was wondering how much or how long you are able to perform manual labor after you have healed from VSG surgery. I live on a farm and there are times, albeit infrequently, when I need to work all day splitting wood or whatever. Does the caloric restriction preclude a full day of hard work?

Once my doc was sure that I was healing properly, He released me to start lifting weights (30 days post-op) and I had no restrictions on the amount or type of work I could do.

The surgical incisions heal in about 3 to 4 weeks. After that one could do manual labor. You might have blood sugar issues with the diet. I solved this by eating 2 pieces of fruit daily. Some weirdness happens after the surgery. I developed gout in my foot that lasted a few weeks. Didnt feel 100% for about 5 months. It takes time for your body to adjust. Just take it slow and listen to your body.

I found after 6 weeks when I could lift whatever weight again I can do anything I could before. The only thing I find is if I do real strenous things I keep some Peanut Butter handy in case my blood sugar crashes. I have had it happen 3 times in the 7 months since surgery. Once on a chicken farm getting it ready and it was 110 degrees and twice during body pump class when I was maxing out on weight.

Well, no one is going to believe this but I'll post it anyway.

I had my surgery on a Wednesday, flew home on Friday and went back to work on Monday. My job is 100% manual labor. I had one of my employees lift anything heavy but other than that, I returned to my normal work habits.

That's crazy! I'd be terrified about splitting my staple line!

I am an LNA and are constantly lifting patients and pushing heavy equipment. I'm off 6 weeks and I hope I'm able to do my job safely when I go back. I'm so paranoid lol

I was very cautious. I took it very slow and easy. I think I'm 8 weeks out now. I feel great. I think I'm returning to normal. food goes down great. I do get full really quick. Today I ate a sausage roll from daylight doughnuts and I was surprised I could eat the entire thing. It filled me completely up.

I admit that the one fear I had was getting a hernia. I'm glad that has passed.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
