I was surprised to learn that people who have had surgery suffer from back n hip pain due to rapid weight loss. I was stunned since this is one of my reasons for surgery. How long did it take body to adjust n pain subside? I have bad sciatica n herniated disks for over 29 yrs n cortisone injections just don't last as long n pain prevents me from walking far etc. Thanx for feedback

I did not have back issues before surgery. I find myself twisting to pop my back into place. I plan on finding a chiropractor to work my back into alignment. I agree it is due to the weight loss.

This thread just reminded me that my back doesn't hurt anymore! (How did I not notice that?)

I had lower back pain before surgery. The pain continued (although it changed slightly, but still hurt) post-op through about (I'm trying to remember here) ... 10-12 weeks post-op. I'm now 16 weeks and 2 days post-op.

So that was my experience.

I've read somewhere that that can happen because of the reasons already mentioned. Our center of gravity changes and different muscles have to do more work. Having a strong core helps prevent and correct this, and I'm a big believer in chiropractic care. But In my case, all of my lower back, knee and ankle pain completely went away within 2-3 months of surgery. (I broke L4 and L5 when I was 18, so I know about chronic lower back pain!).

A year post op, I have more hip pain than I had when I was heavy. I attribute some of that to being more active. I had to have a cortisone shot in one hip and think I may need one in the other hip relatively soon. I wake up in the middle of the night hurting sometimes. I had my gall bladder out three weeks ago, as soon as I am able I'm going to focus less on weight loss and more on strength training, specifically my glutes and core. I hope this will help!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
