Anyone have C Diff post op?

Recommended Posts

I had my sleeve surgery Nov 18th. I was feeling well with the exception of loose stools for the past couple of weeks up until about 5 days ago. I just seem to have gotten worse. I get nauseous and dizzy if I am up for very long and i get stomach cramping diarrhea shortly after I eat. I've tried switching to lactaid milk in case it's from lactose intolerance but I don't think that's it. I did call my surgeons office and am going in tomorrow morning. I haven't been able to take my Vitamins the past several days because they make me sick. I feel weak. I wanted to know if anyone has had C Diff post op. I was reading that these are some of the symptoms. I'm hoping not. But if anyone has had that can you fill me in on your symptoms and what the treatment was. Thank you

I developed C diff from antibiotics I was given for a tooth root abscess about 6 weeks after my VSG. My symptoms were severe cramping followed immediately by diarrhea (like 5 seconds later). It wasn't associated with eating, and happened 12-15 times/day. Because of the type of antibiotics I was given (clindamycin which is one of the worst for wiping out your normal GI flora) my PCP immediately suspected C diff. The first test came up negative. But I read about the test and found that the ELISA method they used has a high false negative rate. So I made the lab rerun the test using PCR and it came back positive. (My PCP was on vacation at the time, so I was communicating with him via text and pretty much dealing with the lab myself)

Let me know what your doctor thinks and how your tests came out. My treatment plan was fairly long, so I'll hold off on the details until then.

Hi Kindle,

My surgeon sent me to the er to work me up for c diff and it came back negative. The also gave me 3 bags of iv Fluid saying I was a little dehydrated. They also checked to see if maybe I had a uti and that was also negative. I came home with a prescription for Imodium. Been taking it but I am still getting the cramping and diarrhea. I hadn't read your post yet about you having two tests show different results but I go back next Wednesday so I am going to ask the dr. Thanks for the info.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
