Water Bottle + Other Recommendations?

Recommended Posts

Hi there. I am having surgery on the 17th and I am curious what you veterans use to drink out of after surgery, especially since you'll have to carry your Water with you everywhere. It's just not convenient for me to have an open glass/cup everywhere, but most of my water bottles at home have some sort of straw which I know is not allowed.

I know someone mentioned using a tervis tumbler with the sip style lid, and I do have one of those, but I find them less than optimal and am wondering if anyone's found other options that they like.

I know we are not supposed to drink from straws, but I have at least 2 camelbak water bottles with the bite-tip that doesn't allow much, if any, air through. (Plus they have the nice feature of being guaranteed for life.) Has anyone had any luck with those? Does your doctor say it's okay? (I have my final meeting with the surgeon on Thursday and will definitely ask him then!)

Also, does anyone take their doctor's recommendation of buying small toddler-size plastic plates and flatware for eating after surgery? I am thinking of purchasing some of Amazon. Does anyone find this helpful? What did you use?

I use a smaller/dessert plate usually and regular utensils...I know a lot of people that use toddler sizes...you can get them at Wal-Mart etc ...no need for Amazon

I can't help with the Water bottle situation... I have to drink with a straw...figure if that's the worse thing I do, it's not so bad ;) ... my teeth are too sensitive

I am still pre-op but have been drinking a ton of Water. I love this thermos water bottle. The top opens with a press on the button. It's easy to carry and fits well in my hand. It isn't thermal.

@@Inner Surfer Girl This is what I ended up buying! It is absolutely perfect. I really wanted something easy that I could later take to the gym that I wouldn't have to unscrew every time I wanted a drink. This is so convenient! Thank you so much for the suggestion! I like that it also helps you keep track of your intake!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
