Peanut butter, can anyone recommend a good brand?

Recommended Posts

I live on the west coast in Calif, and I know brand names are a little different from one coast to another but can anyone recommend a brand of Peanut Butter low in fat and sugar? I am at a loss on this one.

I grind my own at whole foods. It's easy and tastes great. Plus it allows me to do a variety of nut butters. It is probably more expensive but you don't have to worry about what is in it!

I agree with @macman. The other brand which is available at whole foods is Justin's. They only have one ingredient, much like the grind it yourself stuff, I like that in the nut butters I use. It will be hard to get away from some fat with it being a nut butter, but avoiding those with added oil is a great way to reduce unnecessary fat and sugar.

I say look for a natural one. You will see the oil floating on top. No added sugar and taste amazing. At least to me. I absolutely love Peanut Butter, but try to stay away fro it since surgery. Too many calories for me right now. But hopefully I can return during maintenance.

Just in case you haven't heard about it there is a product called PB2, powdered Peanut Butter, which I use in my shakes. It has 85% less fat.

I don't grind my own, but I only buy natural brands. If you read the ingredients list it should only say peanuts or sometimes peanuts, oil and/or salt. I also like almond and other nut butters. I don't seat the amount of fat, because I'm never eating more than a tsp of it.

I tried quite a few, and I would recommend the Jif Natural...that one spreads well and tastes great by itself, in a sandwich, on veggies, and on the reduced fat crackers.

Wish you the best!

Better'n Peanut Butter: http://www.betternpeanutbutter.com/index.php

Yummy yummy! 100 calories a serving, and varying flavors. I've purchased banana and Low Sodium.

I also do PB2. I'll reconstitute it with a flavored SF Torani Syrup instead of Water.... And you can also find Peanut Flour in bulk. Like PB2, but no salt or sugar added.

Get organic, whatever you do. I'm envious because to me Peanut Butter is one of the last remaining things I can't have too easily accessible. Makes me think of a thread on here last year, "peanut butter is the devil" -- still makes me laugh.

PB2 is available in the "healthy section" in most stores...it also has a chocolate variety, someone said if you mix with hazelnut sugar free Syrup, it tasts like Nutella... I haven't experimented with it yet... I just bought both to give it a try...

Skippy Peanut Butter was all we ate in this house. Loved it straight out the jar. I am very picky about my food.

PB2 is really pretty good. We use it mostly in our shakes, but I did try a nibble the one day my husband mixed it with some Water. Tasted pretty good!!

Something to consider when choosing a Peanut Butter or nut butter.

PB2 ingredients.

I don't like the added sugars in processed nut butters. Since I never eat more than a tbsp at a time I'll take the fat in the organic brands.

Many of the ones that say "natural" still have added sugar. I use Laura Scudders. Nothing but peanuts and salt. I'd rather have the fat than the sugar

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
