bad hospital experience

Recommended Posts

Hi all I am new here and new to all this I wacted to get stasted and participate some how. And first off I will confess I work in a hospital also.

But I had a really bad experience at the houshospital during my surgery last week. It started out bad. I was asked to show up at 1030 for a 1230 scheduled surgery. 2 days prior they told me my surgery had been moved and now not to show up until 11 for a 1pm scheduled surgery.

I showed up at 1045 and was greeted and checked in by 3 of them. God bless them they were great but I was going to send me family on their way and not meet up with them until I was d/c'd from the hospital. I tried to ask them where my wife would come yo pick me up and got 4 different answers from 3 of them. Okay that was no bin deal. We'd figure that out later.

The surgery waiting area was busy, I was given a pager and within 5 minutes was paged and the registration people efficiently did their job.

Then I waited and waited and waited. I understand going to the doctor and his time is more important than mine and I wait an hour in the waiting room than an hour in the exam room for 10 minutes of his time. But this w ai t really got me riled up.

The people who came at the same time as me got called back, the people who got there after me got called back and the ones who just arrived got called back.

I weat to Myrtle the volunteer who said yes I had been checked in and she was also wondering why I hadn't been called back.

When it was come to the time that my surgery was scheduled I insisted myrtle call someone, they got a message to me they were running behind. I had figured that out at that point.

No one communicated with me. At about 3 I got back in preoperative room told the anythegiologis I was anxious got some meds and it was all good after that. I did get to call my wife until after 7 pm for a 45 minute procedure scheduled for 1pm.

There were some other things that happened b later and I'm not sure I can put them in proper prospective cause I got so upset over this.

I'm really happy my surgery is over and I am on th e road to getting healthier.

Am I just in being upset and dispointed at the hospital or should I just fo r get about it and focus on moving forward? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Honestly, you will never get that time back. As you know, so much happens in a hospital that it could've been anything. I say let your coordinator know what happened with a goal of working on the communication and the efficiency of information going to patients in waiting and let it go. Focusing on how you feel, getting your nutrients in, and exercise should be all you concern yourself with now. Good luck on your journey!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
