Hi Choopie

In my opinion and what I did was...I only walked, strolled nothing powerful for the first two weeks after surgery. I was an exerciser before surgery so I just chilled. Two weeks out I started using the elyptical, the stationary bike, the treadmill and got sweaty for 30 to 40 minutes. But I didn't stress my tummy by doing inclines. I wouldn't have ridden my bike because I would have been scared of falling or getting hit or something until I was 6 weeks out but my bike trail is pretty congested and I live in a city neighborhood so there's a bit of risk just getting to the trail. At 6 weeks out however, I hit the gym hard; there were no restrictions on what I did.

As for running I tried at 260 pounds by walking a minute and running 30 seconds for for a total of 20 minutes. I moved to a walk a minute, run a minute and so forth, you can find all kinds of variations on how to start running. My knee started to hurt when I was able to run 5 minutes. I figured I needed to get more weight off then pick up running again later.

I really started biking around that time, it helped that it was May too. The weather in Ohio is good for riding in May.

At around 215 I started running again and I do about 3 to 6 miles a week now. I'm not nearly as dedicated as many runners but I still like it as part of a power workout.

My points are 1) if it hurts don't do it, find something else. 2) Try again later. 3) Always have a stretch workout goal that you are striving for. It feels better than losing weight when you meet those goals. Mine so far this year have been running a 5-K, and doing a century (100 miles in a day) ride. I have a horrific relay race that is running/cycling and obsticals in August with Babygrl1234 who I met on here and running a 10K in the fall.

Hope that helps.

wow! thank u so much for the info i will definitely use it to my advantage good luck on the relay race im sure u will do well ill keep u posted on my progress i hope one day 2 b able to do that amount of exercise ive always wanted to be somewhat athletic but my weight was always an issue

(this is random and has nothing to do with this thread: D - can you leave me feedback on Etsy? Lol. It looks so lonely with no feedback. You can say I suck or whatever...)

B - Sorry about the troubles with your band. I can sympathize. Hopefully things will balance out and ease up for you soon!

No ride for me tonight.....we got about 5 hours of sleep last nite and work was busy today. We are planning a 25 mile ride tomorrow evening...Saturday and Sunday plan to rack up the miles...I am going to get close to getting in 100 miles !!! Wohohooooo

That will defiantly help with my training.

Welcome all the newbies!!!! it is so great to see the thread so active again. We are all in it for the same reason and enjoy helping...so if you think a a question is dumb, ask anyway....I am sure we have asked it to,

Damn you. Really a 10K? Now I feel like the bar has been raised. Why oh why must I be so competetive.?

You know BG, when you look at the Goalies, the people who have made it to goal, they are runners or anorexic.

I like me some food so I think I need to run to my goal weight. Alison wants to run too, so I thought we'd set that as a challenge. And since you're being competetive the idea is to do it in an hour or less. Yeah, 10 minute miles.

So I'm working on buliding my speed a little then I'll start adding distance. I want to run but not for more than an hour. That's just silly.

AND.........depending on my school schedule and how I'm feeling about biking in general we are talking about doing the Apple Cider Century again on Labor Day. It's in Michigan. You interested?

Hey look, I'm posted more than you now too.

Regardless how I beat you, you will always trump me in that you are 40 years younger than me and you always will be.

Wow, I have just been noticing all you experience riders weight loss tickers. There is some amazing results amongst this group. I'm so impressed. Gee, I wonder if it has to do with all the exercise/biking? There must be a connection!! Makes me glad I got my bike and wanna get more fit so I can do the distances some of you folks do. Congratulations!

Question: when you were starting out, did you ever think you'd be where you are at today?

You paste your ticker in your signature box. If you go to the CP User link you'll find the signature box.

As for did I think I'd be here now when I started? I actually thought I'd be closer to goal. Don't get me wrong, I'm going to see my goal, but the loss slows the further you get from surgery. I just thought I'd maintain -10 a month until I hit goal. That's just silly.

I have had every expectation since the get go that I would be fit, powerful, and happy. I am those three things, so in that aspect I am where I thought I would be.

Vague huh?

I am in for the Apple Cider. I was planning on doing the ODRAM but I think I am going to hold off on that until next year. Not because I can't do the 152 miles but because I do not think I am ready to do it as fast as I need to finish.

Question: when you were starting out, did you ever think you'd be where you are at today?

Exercise wise not in a million years. When I started biking in May last year I could barely do a mile. I cried because my husband made me go 6 miles a few weeks later and I could not do it without stopping. Now I can ride effortlessly for 30+ miles. I did a week long bike trip across the state.

Now I did think i would be at goal by now and that the food demons would be tamed, but alas, not so much. I will get there one day though.

I also did think I would be at goal and that I would have this whole thing figured out. I still am not at goal. Have stalled many many times...gained some, lost it again, then regained it. I have eaten way too much at times. I have gotten stuck on food that I keep eating, why I keep eating it is a mystery even to myself. I eat too fast still and too big of bites sometimes. I slime and feel horrible at times that I can't get myself to do it right everytime....BUT, I never in all my life did I think I would be climbing up the mountian passes that I climb with my bike. A few years ago I would say to DH when I saw someone riding their bike up passes was " WOW, now, look at them, they look like they are having soooooooooooo much fun, lets do that for fun huh?" and then go jump on my four wheeler with food in hand. Now, I am one of those people and love it. I would of thought you were crazy if you had told me I would be a lady that loves her bicycle more than anything(with exceptions)a year ago!!!!!! You will get there and you will be one of those people...just wait and see!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
