Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

I got my first whistle yesterday while biking. I have to say I was surprised. Since now most my chubbiness up front and center I can see why someone might whistle at me from behind.

Yes, she did just say that.

As for what people might think I tried to give up that mentality when I left high school. When I was big if you wanted to see what a 300 pound woman looks like I'd say stare. I was showing my stomach-ass to other LBTers in the food court at the mall last Saturday.

Life's too short to be worried about the foolish behavior or thoughts of other people.

And welcome btw. Cycling does start slowly and with short distances. You'll surprise yourself at how quickly you'll add distance and time. It's pretty quick and rewarding.

HP, forget the challenge ride tonight, hubby just reminded me of commitments tonight....aweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, I was so looking forward to riding tonight since only getting in a measly 14 last night...oh well, it does always feel nice to have rest days, ok then Thursday, I know you said you were riding then, lets do it then!!!

I wanna get whistled at too!!

Thanks for the info on getting started at this biking. I didn't have any Water this morning. I got up, brushed my eat, ate some eggs and then since I am not supposed to drink for 30-60 min after meals I went w/o water and then went later in the morning and it's a 99 degree day today so was heating up already. Would it be better to drink and not eat before my ride? or just drink with this one meal since eggs pretty much slide right through anyway??

Wow!! Whosyadaddy!! Awesome results!! I wanna be like you when I grow up in lapband land!!

Long2be, take some Water with you. If you were just out for 1/2 hour, probably ok...any long, take water. Our stats are almost exactly the same...I started at 305.5, then two week pre op diet put me to 295.5 on surgery day, my goal is to be 170. That is pretty cool, I was like, wow, we are the same person!!!

i got banded on monday july 14th when is a good time to start bike riding i would also like to try to become a runner of course i know i have to begin with the walking but i would like to know when is it a good time to start bike riding:cool2:

Long2be, take some Water with you. If you were just out for 1/2 hour, probably ok...any long, take water. That is pretty cool, I was like, wow, we are the same person!!!

My long lost twin!!! That is really similar stats. I hope I can have a loss like your's then too! I was 305.4, then 295.4 pre op and my goal is 169, I said 170 at first but that still puts me in the overweight BMI so 169. LOL How tall are you? I'm 5'9 and a lot of it's in my legs so had a hard time getting my seat at a comfy riding height, that didn't hurt my bad knee.

When was your surgery?? (never mind I see it in your post!)

LOL..I am 5'7" but I will be fine with not being right where the doc says I should be. I want to feel good and look good, but not looking to be a size 4....I have never been that. The smallest I remember being in high school is a 10...so, I would be very happy with a 12 at this time. Maybe when I get down to 170 then I will go to 154, which is what the doc says I should be at for my height. We can't all be the same weight though, people are soooo different looking and shaped so different. You will do great!!! I just know you will, especially if you keep on riding your bike....its great exercise and burns a lot of calories..

Hi Choopie

In my opinion and what I did was...I only walked, strolled nothing powerful for the first two weeks after surgery. I was an exerciser before surgery so I just chilled. Two weeks out I started using the elyptical, the stationary bike, the treadmill and got sweaty for 30 to 40 minutes. But I didn't stress my tummy by doing inclines. I wouldn't have ridden my bike because I would have been scared of falling or getting hit or something until I was 6 weeks out but my bike trail is pretty congested and I live in a city neighborhood so there's a bit of risk just getting to the trail. At 6 weeks out however, I hit the gym hard; there were no restrictions on what I did.

As for running I tried at 260 pounds by walking a minute and running 30 seconds for for a total of 20 minutes. I moved to a walk a minute, run a minute and so forth, you can find all kinds of variations on how to start running. My knee started to hurt when I was able to run 5 minutes. I figured I needed to get more weight off then pick up running again later.

I really started biking around that time, it helped that it was May too. The weather in Ohio is good for riding in May.

At around 215 I started running again and I do about 3 to 6 miles a week now. I'm not nearly as dedicated as many runners but I still like it as part of a power workout.

My points are 1) if it hurts don't do it, find something else. 2) Try again later. 3) Always have a stretch workout goal that you are striving for. It feels better than losing weight when you meet those goals. Mine so far this year have been running a 5-K, and doing a century (100 miles in a day) ride. I have a horrific relay race that is running/cycling and obsticals in August with Babygrl1234 who I met on here and running a 10K in the fall.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
