Has anyone taken up Bycyling?

Recommended Posts

Well goodness, we got about 55 miles in the last two days, so I say thats a good thing. I think my hubby is going to get me a new road bike. I have a mens bike and it is hurting my shoulders and neck. There is a creamsicle looking one at the LBS, a trek pilot...I believe like HP's??? I am excited!!!! I just love new bikes!!!

It is suppose to be around 90 today, so it snowed last week now its 90...what a state I live in. A state of confusion!!!

HP, how far do you usually ride when you go? I have a computer on both my mountain and road bike so I can keep track. I am going to challenge myself for the rest of June til the end of July to get in 1000 miles on my bikes.

Hey Vegas, Falicity I rode the Red Rock something or another when I was there in January. It was 5 miles up, up, up and 15 miles down, down, down. I scared on the down part and had the bike rental company come pick me up. But wow what a great place to bike! I walked most of the way up the five miles too, btw. I'd have been much happier on my own bike, not on a rental. Lesson learned.

Hi Grapes! Welcome to the bycyling piece of LBT. Nice to have you both here.

D, that sounds like an awesome goal. My miles are just getting fewer and fewer. I hope to pick up my slacker self later in the season. I just don't have time to get on my bike like I did last year.

XO,

J

You usually ride 50 or more miles at a time dont you J? Is it just not worth it to go for shorter rides for you? We start out from our house and go, we don't have to drive anywhere to ride, I wonder if that is what a lot of people have to do.

BG, who are you riding that with? J?

We have GOBA-The Great Ohio Bicycle something and a OXO something cross Ohio.

There's RAIN, Ride Across Indiana, which is 156 miles in one day, in August, which is pure insanity.

Michigan has a tour of the uppper part too, right BG?

And no, I'm not riding with her. I perfer to lay on the beach for my week off. Or maybe do a cycling tour of Napa valley. LOL.

As for me riding, right now my time is a premium, so I don't typically ride except for on the weekends. If I only have an hour to exercise I find I can work more intensely at that gym with spinning or a class than I can get on the bike.

However, I do love to get out on the road. There's a path close to my house but it's super busy with dog walkers, bikers, joggers, it's hard to go fast and against the law, and there are no hills. I live in the middle of the city. So to ride on the road for fun is scary. I prefer to put my bike on the car and get out to the corn growing parts of Ohio. However this summer my cycling group is doing rides early in the morning from the middle of the city out to the berbs on the weekends. That should be fun...

Again, I want to be a stay at home full time student. It would be so cool to not be so pressed for time.

We have not taken the boat out at all, but it has been too cold. We are going out on the 4th I think, and the gas prices....hmmmmm, what gas prices, I own three bikes!!!!! LOL...yeah, that kind of puts a damper on the boating fun. Oh well, I would way rather be biking anyways.

D!!!! Hello my fellow bikin buddie!!!!

I actually did not get to get the pilot....I purchased the Trek 2100 WSD....I do love the bike though...still trying to make adjustments...but all in all......defiantly glad I upgraded....:frown:

As far as distance...depends on who is riding and where we go. Unlike you, we do have to drive just to ride anywhere which really stinks...loading the bikes, unloading , etc.....we do have a bike rack now which makes it allot easier than last year.

So...If we ride with my 14 year old.....we usually go between 10-20 miles a night. If I ride with my 17 year old, we go about 15-30 miles.

If john and I ride.....we go from 20-50 miles. But those events are usually just on the weekends or days off work. If I want to ride during the evening after work, we usually keep it under 20 miles.

I did join a group at work and they cycle different times after work and they are of all skill levels. So, we may do one of there rides after work and see how it goes

D...what kind of pedals do you have and are you going to put on your new bike???? I am still trying to get the hang of my clip less ones, love it as long as I am going..hate it if I need to stop...LOL

Ok, sorry so long....

J in Michigan we ahve the ODRAM (one day ride across michigan) which is 152 miles. That is in September and yes my crazy self will be attempting it. We actually have many week long trips. A lot of shoreline rides and one to the up. Unfortunately I just can't afford them all. The PALM is by far the cheapest at only $120 for the week.

Well, HP!! I do have the clipless pedals on my road and mountain bike. I have fallen over three times so far when I forgot to unclip when I stopped. I was not seriously injured, so all is good. Although, it sure does hurt the pride to have people laughing at you!!!

Ok, let go with the challenge!! I just added 35.89 miles last night, so you better get with it lady!!! I think Saturday we are going to do a 60 mile ride I found. There is a 26, 60, and 100 miles ride, there are a few hills, not small, rolling ones either. So, I think we can manage the 60 miler. The most we have ever gone at one time is around 40-45 I think, and that was last season.

I guess I should feel so very lucky that I can bike up at home and take off and go right from the house, since most of you have to load it all up and then go.

BG, I FOUND A STATE RIDE HERE IN IDAHO!!!!! But, we are too late to sign up....it is a 430 mile ride taking 7 days, but it is 600 dollars!!!! Only 200 people allowed to participate. They do it in August. They start registering in January and the website said that last year they were booked five months in advance. I didn't even try to see if we could get in this year, but next year for sure, I will be done with school and working full time so I am planning my vacay for August for sure!!!!!

I contacted the Idaho Cycling Enthusiasts (I.C.E) and talked with the President. That is the only group here in Southeast Idaho. THey are mostly very competitive road racers. BUMMER!!! I don't want to RACE!!!!! I just want to ride. We did find a nice relaxed, easy rolling road with few cars to ride on last night. It was a nice change of pace of what we usually do.

BG, included in the $120, is that food and everything???????

I have a different computer on both the bikes, one is a trek elite lime and not sure what the one is.

HAS ANYONE HEARD ABOUT STEF OR FROM HER??????

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
