babygrl1234 6 Posted March 11, 2008 First off play with your gears on flat road. Find out how to get your bike into the easiest gear to pedal. That is the gear you want to use on hills to start. Girl when I first got on my bike last May I barely made it a mile. Barely. I thought I was going to die and I would never be able to ride. Within a month I could do 10 miles. It took a lot of hard work and was dicouraging at times but I finally did it. DO be upset you can't do hills now. Eventually when you becoe a stronger rider you will be able to do hills easy. Look back at some of the posts in the first 50 pages of the thread if you have time. You will see things we struggled with and can now do. It will happen, it just takes time. babygrl1234 6 Posted March 11, 2008 J I am not gonna lie, It was effing frigid out there. I wish I had warm workout clothes because I would have stayed out longer. But I had the kids, and their scooters, and after Jared fell in the 4th puddle and was drenched I knew it was time to go home.
Suzzzie. 3 Posted March 12, 2008 THanks BG. It's just weird... I mean, riding a bike was so easy when I was 5. haha. Why should it be so much HARDER now?!?! Wah!! OK, done with my pity party... I took some Ibuprofen for my sore ass and back and will try again tomorrow. Damnit. I'm gonna get back on that horse! And hey, I may have slammed into a concrete wall today (embarrassing!) but at least I didn't fall off the bike!
Turler 6 Posted March 12, 2008 Hi gang! It's so cool to hear everyone gearing up for rides...or actually riding!! Awesome! I don't know if I'm going to brave the cold and the wind this weekend. I'm on call Saturday and Sunday so I gotta be ready to go in at any moment. ZZ: Hang in there! You are doing great! Just getting out there is half the battle. Keep trying and you'll amaze yourself with your progress! ~C
OH Juli 15 Posted March 12, 2008 ZZ, 1.5 miles is fantastic! It truly is, I'm not just making that up. When I went for my first ride last year that was about the same that I did. The next time I went out I did about 2 miles, then 3, then 5 and slowly more and more. I was just talking with Alison yesterday about how we nearly died on our first 14 mile ride last summer! What's cool about cycling is that you can improve quickly!!!!! Don't give up! You'll be surprised at how well you do!
Suzzzie. 3 Posted March 12, 2008 I think I want to take my bike to a shop and have the gears checked, cause like I said, when i change them they don't do anything - the chain just sounds and feels like it is loose or skipping or something. A hazzard of buying an old used bike I guess. The ladies I work with, and my friend Brian all want to go biking, but they want to do trails that would require more like a mountain bike, so I plan on getting one soonish... probably just a cheapie from walmart... hopefully, even though it';s cheap, it will work easily and I will get over my frustrations and start building the leg strength I need. I refuse to be defeated by a bycyle! If I could do it whenI was 5 I can do it now!!
Suzzzie. 3 Posted March 12, 2008 BTW - do any of you watch the Biggest Loser?? Haha. I HEART Jillian! She cusses like a fucking sailor!!
TexasFire 84 Posted March 12, 2008 ZZ - I heart you! You did great, so don't beat yourself up! Everyone here is giving you great tips and advice, especially BG. And J is right about cycling being a "quick improve" activity...you will be flying before you know it. Did you oil your chain real good last weekend? If so, it might not be a bad idea to have the bike checked out at your LBS like you said. Don't give up! I'm so proud of you for getting out there today and doing that mile and a half! OH Juli 15 Posted March 12, 2008 ZZ, There are many adjustments to the gears the LBS can do for you too. If I may suggest, borrow a bike for mountain biking to see if you dig it or not. It bumps you around a lot. I'm prissy and don't care for mud and ticks or the jostling you get. But it might be the perfect fit for you. However, like other sports the cost of gear can add up quickly. So see if you like it first... I'm really impressed with you btw, for putting yourself out there. You're amazing! Suzzzie. 3 Posted March 12, 2008 Aww, thanks J!! That means alot! I feel like a big ole loser! haha. There is a 2 mile wal/bike trail near my house that is pretty dang level... I might try to take my bike there, I think as long as I don't have to go up any hills I'll be OK. As the gears at stuck right now, if I'm going downhill my pedalling doesn't make a difference, I just coast, and if I'm going uphill then I can't pedal at ALL! Calling the LBS today to see if they can look at it for me. My ass hurts still. and so do my thighs. I'm sitting here at work today with a sore ass thinking "what was I thinking?!?!!" and then I hear the songs 'Bicycle' by Queen - and I know I can do it. Bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride it where I like You say black I say white You say bark I say bite You say shark I say hey man Jaws was never my scene And I don't like Star Wars You say Rolls I say Royce You say God give me a choice You say Lord I say Christ I don't believe in Peter Pan Frankenstein or Superman All I wanna do is Bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my Bicycle races are coming your way So forget all your duties oh yeah Fat bottomed girls they'll be riding today So look out for those beauties oh yeah On your marks get set go Bicycle race bicycle race bicycle race Bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle bicycle Bicycle bicycle bicycle Bicycle race You say coke I say caine You say John I say Wayne Hot dog I say cool it man I don't wanna be the President of America You say smile I say cheese Cartier I say please Income tax I say Jesus I don't wanna be a candidate for Vietnam or Watergate Cause all I wanna do is Bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle bicycle bicycle I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride my bike I want to ride my bicycle I want to ride it where I like
