Pro op testing

Recommended Posts

Hello, I started my whole process in August and chest xr, blood work and ekg were only part of my pre op testing. I see everyone on here going for ultrasounds, cat scans, sleep apnea studies. I'm starting to feel worried that I didn't have to do all that. I'll bring it up to my Dr's attention on next visit, but should I be concerned. I mean...what if he goes in for surgery and I have a problem we didn't know about. Now...I'm scared!

I didn't even have a chest X-ray, just ekg and blood work.

It could be that folks that have a BMI between 35 & 40 have to have documented evidence of co-morbidities in order to get approved for insurance payment. If your BMI is over 40, you don't have to do that.

Yep, co-morbidities are required by some insurance companies before they will cover surgery. I'm not diabetic or have high blood pressure... so sleep Apnea was the co-morbidity that qualified me for insurance approval.

I didn't have any of that extra testing done. Just labs. I am "healthy" though, besides being overweight so it wasn't necessary. It may not be necessary for you to go through all that either.

I didn't even have an EKG, because I had had one in the past two years, did have an Endoscopy and a colonoscopy ,found an ulcer and polyps. Also had testing for sleep Apnea done, which I have. I think testing is different for different doctors. Plus my BmI was almost 50 to start.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
