American board certified. Important?

Recommended Posts

Are any of the bariatric doctors in Mexico American board certified. How important was this in your decision to go to Mexico?

Dr. Ariel Ortiz is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons as well as a full member of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery. Both he and Dr. Arturo Martinez are designated as SRC Bariatric Surgeons of Excellence and their facility, Obesity Control Center, is an International Center of Excellence.

And yes, this played a big part in choosing them as my surgical team, along with their combined 40 years surgical experience, 12,000+ bariatric surgeries, low complication rate and a staff that includes a cardiologist, advanced life support doctors, 2 anesthesiologists, a designated followup doctor and several RN's with bariatric experience.

Thank you for the information! I know that it is quite a bit more expensive to go with him, but I also know if you are going to cut costs, your health is not where to cut them.

Board certification is very important. It means the physician/surgeon have to keep their skills current, complete continuing education, etc. if they aren't board certified, depending on the state, they may have no requirements for quality improvement or continuing education.

My husband and I spoke to Dr Kelly, and we were pleased. I'll probably go with him. My other choice was going with a doctor who did surgery on a friend of mine, but is not American board certified.

Off the top of my head,

Kelley

Ariel Ortiz

These doctors are NOT "American Board Certified". There are no doctors in Mexico that are certified (licensed) in any state in the United States. A surgeon may be a member of organizations in the United States, such as FACS, but that doesn't mean they are certified to practice in the United States. A surgeon must be licensed in a state in the U.S. in order to be "Board Certified". The only bariatric surgeon that I know of in Mexico who is (or used to be) licensed in CA is Dr. Salvator Valencia.

All surgeons in Mexico are licensed "General Surgeons". That is how Mexico licenses their surgeons.

I hope this helps.

I'm scheduled for Angeles, but Dr.Kelly is still fighting the hospital on the price increase to $7,400.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
