Egd, protein shakes, a checklist? ?

Recommended Posts

Hey all!

I have my egd this Friday and feel like it's my half way point to surgery. After the egd, it's one last dietitian appt and that's it -then surgery the last week of Jan or first week of Feb.

I feel like I need a checklist of things to do from now until then. I've asked my Dr's office, but am not getting a very detailed answer.

Would it be ok to start Protein Shakes now? And if so, how? I've never had them before. Also, what else should I stock up on presurgery so I'll be ready postsurgery? I'm taking classes that semester and they will have just started so I want to prepare and plan as much as possible over Christmas break . Maybe I'm getting nervous and all this is coming out from those nerves? I don't know.

Any advice or insight is welcome.

Thank you!

I don't think you need to start with the Protein shakes yet. You'll be doing that before your surgery anyway. You could collect a bunch of recipes from this site and the blog, "The World According to Eggface," Another think I have found helpful is getting the Torani or DaVinci sugarless syrups to be able to change up the flavors of your Protein shake and serve as the base for the recipes. I have tasted ready-made Protein Shakes and Protein powders; some taste terrible, very medicinal. I use powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury because they taste good without that awful taste.

Good luck!

It wouldn't hurt. Any weight you lose pre-op only increases the likelihood of you having a successful surgery. There are a lot of Protein shakes out there in different varieties: powders, premade shakes and liquid Protein. Look for something low carb & low sugar. I was told to make sure there is at least 15gms of Protein per 8 ounces. This is tricky because many premade shakes are more than 8 ounces. Buy a few samples packs. When I was pre opt, I went to brick and mortar places like GNC and Vitamin Shoppe, drug stores like CVS and Rite Aid, as well as Whole Foods.

Hopefully once you have your date they will give you more concrete instructions.

Hi @@livanneluv! That's great that you're being so forward-thinking! You have the perfect attitude for being sleeve-successful!

Although you don't need to start the Protein shakes, you might try out some different brands to see which one you like. You don't want to end up with dozens of shakes you hate.

Even if you don't have to start shakes just yet, making any healthy positive lifestyle changes pre-surgery is a wonderful idea! We have so many lifestyle changes in addition to the sleeve that anything you start working on pre-surgery would be a huge benefit to you post-surgery. Some ideas:

  • start walking daily
  • start going to the gym a few days per week
  • lower caloric intake
  • lower sugar carb intake
  • stop caffeine
  • stop drinking sodas
  • stop eating high-fat foods

Best of luck to you!

Take care all!

I am in school and I work part time. I wish I had started getting a few Protein Shakes ahead of time since they are a bit pricey. So if you cant fork out 50 dollars for a weeks not even a weeks worth then I do suggest getting a few packs. I just wish I knew ahead of time cause I didnt have time or the funds to order the good kinds of shakes. Especially with it being close to the holidays. Good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
