Caffein was a major contributor to my pre-op reflux. I do not want to go there again.

My nutritionist said the same thing as @@MissMac mentioned. He also said caffeine can increase the hunger feeling.

It is also a diuretic. It can lead to dehydration.

I got all my caffeine from coffee. I was told to stop. Reason, the acid can cause ulcers. Also it can cause dehydration. That being said, a poster on here from across the pond stated doctors over there don't restrict caffeine and she was given regular coffee BEFORE leaving the hospital after the sleeve surgery. Go figure. I drink decaffeinated now, but it taste like......well, it does nothing for me, but I enjoy the comfort ofa hot cup of fake coffee in my hand.

There was a big thread on this a while back. Most US doctor's cite increased chance of acid reflux, dehydration and the fact that it can be a diuretic as the reason why they discourage it. I was told no caffeine for the first 6 weeks and then it was allowed in moderation. This can be hard on die hard coffee drinkers and even worse on soda addicts. I drink coffee but only once or twice a week if that. Ironically those in the UK aren't given those restrictions. If coffee is your issue, there are loads of tea and drink subs you can try.

ETA: Here's the previous thread on this subject.

I have 2 cups of coffee every morning. Sometimes I have a cup in the evening too. I still drink all my Water and I rarely ....rarely....have acid reflux. If I do then I take Prilosec. I add a little cream to my coffee too and was told that its perfectly fine and I even get a little Protein with it. My doctor told me that if I have issues with it then cut it out....if I don't then drink on. He said to wait about a month after surgery before I try it. I did...all good. He also said that he has never had a patient that severe issues of any kind because of coffee. I really feel that this is good advise.....you know your body and what makes your stomach ache and what doesn't. Good luck!

For me nothing will replace real coffee, but I do also like tea.

I've read that caffeine dehydrates us and it is hard enough to get all the Fluid in that we are supposed to so if we do drink coffee or tea we would have to increase our Water intake even more. I was a serious Starbucks drinker, at least 2 a day but now it's just not worth it to me. It's hard enough getting down the Water I am supposed to. But I cannot lie, I do indulge in a sip or two some days. Just not Starbucks since it's too expensive to throw away a full cup. Good Luck!

There's no concern with Decaf. In fact my nutritionist encouraged die hard coffee drinkers to switch over to decaffeinated coffees and teas.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
