The pre op struggle

Recommended Posts

I have 11 days until surgery. The longer I am on the liquid diet, the harder it becomes. I thought it would get easier. The 12 hour work days on all liquids is a major struggle. I am exhausted and hungry all the time. Does anyone have advice on helping the constant hunger during this phase?

Honestly, I think that is the hard part because you dont have a smaller stomach where a Protein shake fills you up. I was on it for 7 days and it was a struggle I had to get creative on my broths and shakes... But at the end all worth it just remember that

Are you using a liquid or powdered Protein?? If you are using powder.... Increase it to 2 scoops....also add a cup of strawberries or peaches....they have the lowest amount of calories and carbs. Make your Protein shake thick and eat it with a spoon....its more filling that way. Good luck to you!!!!!

Make sure your spacing your Protein Drinks out...but not so far your going more than say 4 hrs max between. Eat SF Jello and popsicles. Sip on broth! They have a lot of good flavors (Swanson) besides the boring chicken and beef. It's not the funniest time of your life but remember the reason for it!

I am on my pre op diet as well and my hunger pangs come and go. It's just mind over matter, remember why you have decided to do this and visualize yourself after surgery. Eleven days will fly by, stick with it!

Completely agree with @elode. I am on day 5 and what really helps me is making sure I eat/drink something every 2 hours. I set alarms on my phone to remind me. That way I don't reach that point where I feel like I'm starving...which has always sent me into a bad food choce/mind game spiral.

I'm allowed one regular meal a day (high Protein no carbs) and that helps but I have 2 shakes before and 2 after and if I feel hungry between I drink Water with crystal lite or some no/low cal sugar free drink mix. I'm not officially on the pre op diet but I needed to do it for me now so I'm not feeling like I'm forced to do it when the time comes.

Thank you for the advice everyone! I have been drinking premeir Protein drinks because they have 30 grams of protein. I need to find a way to eat every two hours at work. I am a hairstylist and we can't have food at our station :/

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
