So full of post-op questions :) Is it normal not to reach your protein goals 5 days post op?

It's not unusual, but ...

... for me Day Five was the first day I got in 60 grams of Protein.

You can do it with shakes, milk, and yogurt, if your surgeon allows you to drink those food products during Phase 1 post-op.

Don't worry, you'll get there, but do try to get there as soon as you can.

Yes it's normal just keep at it you will get there in time.

Try GNC pro preformance 60. Three scoops in a glass of Water is 60 grams of protien. Drink one of these in the morning and you have your protien for the day. Then the rest of the food/drink is just a bonus. Most of the flavors are not that great but the chocolate is good. I'm on foods now but still have a glass of this in the morning and will continue for the rest of my life to make sure I always have enough protien.

I had that concern too and spoke to my surgeon about it at my first f/u appointment. He told me not to worry about it. To take in what I could for the next 2 weeks and just heal. I was stressed about it myself. Put in a solid effort to try but if you can't, it's okay.

I'm on foods now but still have a glass of this in the morning and will continue for the rest of my life to make sure I always have enough protien.

There is a limit to how much Protein your body can absorb at a time, so be careful that you aren't taking it in to fast or it will be wasted and simply converted to glucose. Best case scenario is whey isolate which is absorbed at 10g/hour. Every other protein source is absorbed even slower. Once I found this out i split up my 30-40g Protein Drink to 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 in the afternoon.

I didn't even have a Protein goal until 3 weeks post op. They wanted me focused on hydration.

My doc never discussed how quickly I would be able to reach the recommended Protein goals. And I don't know how many weeks before I finally reached my protein goals. But for weeks, I was only able to eat a can of Soup a day. I didn't worry about it - as long as I felt okay and didn't have any health problems. I knew I'd get there eventually. My primary focus during that time was to stay hydrated. I knew I had enough fat stored on me to keep me fed... enough to last me through a Zombie Apocalypse! :P

I was told 20g Protein per hour is the limit. I drink pure protein Protein Powder. Very affordable and tastes dare I say good! Each scoop is 25g protein so i pour 1 scoop along with 1c skim milk for 33 g protein total. I drink that over 3 hours. Then I have a Greek yogurt food 15g protein total over 2 sittings. 48 g so far. I'll have more protein drink, about 1/2 serving for 15 g more and I'm almost at minimum. Then I'll randomly fill in the rest, I had a bit of fish, milk and chicken last night.

I was able to drink both broth and shakes right away.

But I agree, hitting your Protein goal right off the bat isn't your highest priority. Getting the fluids in is.

My Dr told me that he had just gone to a seminar from a leading sport teams nutritionist. She STRONGLY encourages her athletes to drink/use skim or lowfat milk instead of Protein Shakes. She said that the Protein in 1 cup of milk would be 100% utilized, whereas a great deal of protein from shakes/powders is NOT utilized or available for the body to process. SO... He told me he's ok with me drinking 1% milk! Yea! I like milk

It just doesn't seem like enough Protein? Unless your able to get in all that milk, blaaa lol

I really don't understand why some nuts have a problem with Protein supplements. whey isolate is the #1 best absorbed form of Protein available, absorbed faster and just as completely as any "real food" protein. It is, in fact, simply the concentrated and dehydrated part of milk that separates out when they make cheese. The rest is casein which is the type of protein that ends up in the curd part and what is in cheese. (Casein, BTW, is what body builders like to take at night. It is absorbed slower than whey and gives them a "slow burn" of amino acids as they sleep). Milk is about 20% whey and 80% casein, which makes the 100% whey protein supplements better and faster absorbed than milk. Not to mention the calorie factor.... 60g protein = 60oz skim milk = 675 calories (even more for 1%) vs 60g protein = 3 scoops whey isolate = 270 calories.

And yes, there are some products out there that may be of lower quality protein and not as readily bioavailable. (I.e. Hydrolyzed collagen) But rather than educate themselves, (and us) these nuts just try and keep it simple by saying all protein supplements are bad.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?
