Sleeve date Dec 15. Started my preop diet 5 days ago. I can eat a piece of shoe leather right now, I am so hungry. Help!

Recommended Posts

I am on 3-4 Protein Shakes a day, plus Clear liquids. First 2 days wasn't too bad, then on day 3, I was very weak and nauseous, on day 4, I cheated and ate grilled fish. Today I ate a 1/2 piece grill chicken with a few pieces of steamed broccoli. I felt so much better after that. Will my surgery be cancelled because I ate solid food? I know the preop diet is to get rid of fat around the liver. I am getting very nervous. I almost have myself talked into NOT having it done.

Start weight 227, goal weight 140. I have diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, family history of heart disease. Having sleeve done for health reasons.

Try drinking Vitamin Water Zero or G2, it will help because they have electrolytes which will help with the weakness. My hunger sudsided after the 5th day. Warm broth sipped from a mug helped me too.

How many grams of Protein are in your shakes? I used Premier and there is 30 grams per drink. Maybe you need one with more Protein?

I had a wedding half way through my two week pre op diet. I went and enjoyed all the food. I went back to striclty liquids the next day and my surgery went fine. I am not saying cheating is OK, but going forward no more solid foods and you should be ok.

Maybe you can have some sugarfree ice pops?

Good luck, I know it is hard.....you can do it!

Surgery won't be canceled, everything will be ok. Not all doctors require a 2 week pre-op diet. According to my Dr, there was a study done recently which showrd that the size and amount of fat on the liver didn't change significantly enough during the pre-op diet to actually make a difference. My Dr. only told me to eat light the week before surgery and drink only liquids for up to 3 days before surgery so that there is no foodin your stomach when they operate. He also mentioned that Dr's do the two week liquid diet so that the patients get used to the liquid diet for 2 weeks after surgery.

Try your hardest to stick to it! It is so important to make that liver floppy so they can easily move it around.

I say stick with your pre-op diet! I know it's hard I was on the same one for two full weeks. It is to shrink your liver AND some surgeons also want to see how compliant you will be. Surgery is pretty serious but if you are thinking you don't want to do because of the pre-op diet maybe you should rethink your decision, Make sure your spacing your sakes out throughout the day and drinking lots of fluids. Eat some Sf Popsicles or Jello. Try not to focus on food so much. Good luck!

I am glad my surgeon put me on a 1000 calorie a day diet instead of total liquids for 2 weeks! I don't think having a bit of Protein with veggies once a day is going to hurt you. You just need to remember that it isn't a free for all and then stick in chips, Cookies, candy, ice cream..... :)

Thanks for the comments everyone. I am on GNC 100%Whey Protein Powder. 20 grams 8 oz serving. I am better today. Went to a family picnic, brought my shakes and sugar free Jello. Kept busy playing with the grandkids and tried to drink a lot of Water. I'm 57 and have been overweight for 30 years. Just getting nervous. Appreciate all the support. Dec. 15! Is my day.

I have been on the liquid diet for 4 days now (surgery is scheduled for the 16th) and it is HELL! I ran into the bariatric coordinator at our hospital though (I am a RN) and she told me to eat some grilled chicken that it wouldnt hurt, and to add fruit to my Protein Shake (except bananas). She assured me this was normal, acceptable, and wouldn't hurt a thing.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.
