Carbonated beverages

Just a quick question. How long after surgery before you were able to drink diet soda? I don't miss any foods, but I really miss Diet Dr Pepper.

I don't know about your surgeon but mine doesn't want me to have it....ever. Which I'm ok with because I never drank soda anyway. You may want to call and ask your DR.

Not ever? Ugh! I do need to check with the doc on that! I was hoping I could try it after 6 months maybe.

My surgeon recommends giving it up forever, however it is mandatory for a year. The reason being that the gas, (carbonation) tends to stretch your new stomach.

If you make it 6 months you may not be craving it anymore! Then there is no point in starting again!

My surgeon said a year....but I don't think I'll try it. Diet Pepsi was my drug of choice & I'm not sure I want to feed my addiction again....to flipping hard to break!

I agree, you probably won't crave it after a few months. My "forbidden foods" list after surgery are soda, alcohol, gum, seeds, nuts, and popcorn. These are not forever forbidden and it is different for everyone. You need to take it day by day and not focus too much on never having it again. You may find that giving up soda (even diet soda) helps you to lose weight.

i have 2 cousins that has this surgery done 4 yrs ago. they drink soda. not a lot, but they treat themselves from time to time...even a beer sometimes. it has not stretched their tummys or effected their weight loss, one of them is currently a size 2. i asked them about it and they said you just burp more than before, lol.

Although i know WLS patients that have added diet sodas to their diets, I see no reason to start drinking diet soda. I think studies have shown that drinkers of soda, even diet soda, weigh more than people who don't. That's good enough for me. But also, diet sodas are made with aspertame. I have never really trusted that sweetener and have always tried to avoid it whenever possible.

After 6 weeks I was approved to drink diet soda again. I have been drinking it from that point forward and have had no negative results. Diet soda is not good for you, but once your sleeve has healed at around 6 weeks, it's not going to hurt you either. Keep in mind though that once you kick the diet soda habit to get into surgery, maybe it's best to keep it kicked?

Yeah.. Diet Pepsi was what I missed the most, but I'm kinda over it now. After some of the previous experiences I've had with food, I don't think the carbonation would be pleasant anyway.

They said to not drink bubbly stuff, but the nutritionist also told us that it's mostly because of discomfort and some people do okay further out with flatter soda or using something like a SodaStream and using less carbonation.

My friend is 10 years out from a bypass, and drinks soda to bring up gas when she can't burp.

I may have one or 2 diet pops a month. I'll usually get a diet coke at McD's and let the ice melt so it goes flat. Diet Vernor's (it's a Michigan treasure) and diet A&W won't lose carbonation. I swish them around so I flatten it before swallowing.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
