Asher325, I thought it was going to be really hard too and it turned out it was. It as bad as I thought it would be. For me broth, good broth was my saving grace. The Protein Drinks can be so sweet.

I am on day 3 of my pre-op and have a wicked headache! I've been napping all day to keep my mind off food! We can do this!!

I'm on day 3 also and I am having a hard time fighting the food temptations around me! I will admit I cheated yesterday by having a few chips that where calling my name, and I logged them in my food journal so I can hold myself accountable, but now I have removed all the bad foods away from me so I'm not tempted and can get back on track. I'm continuing to exercises six days a week and push myself to the finish line.

@@dmaddox1,

Your pre-op diet sounds similar to mine. I am also allowed sugar free Jello, pudding and broths, and I can add reduced fat milk to my shakes....I would definitely check-in, maybe they have allowances that will make this more tolerable for you. Good luck

Well guys&gals...I am on Day 8 of the pre-op diet and it has finally gotten easier. Still tough, don't get me wrong...but it is better. I finally found a Protein shake I can stomach. It is the unjury brand powder. I make it myself with 1/2 cup milk and 1/2 cup Water and a few ice cubes. strawberry sorbet is not too bad. My stomach is still growling through even as I type this...nasty ole tummy...hehe. Plus I am retired and found if I find me things to do and keep myself busy I have less time to have a pity party. I did get back on my Lyrica and I got myself some Tylenol for my withdrawal headache and those seem to be working. Thanks again for all the support! :)

I know some of this is in my head and I really did not realize just how much....but I feel like I'm dying! & I am just on day 5 of my pre-op diet. I think it is several things piled on top of me. I have diabetic neuropathy in my legs and normally take Lyrica. I thought I would try and wean myself off of it...but I have been up the last 2 nights with no sleep. I have a headache and I am hungry!

I think I am starving to DEATH! I am drinking 3 Protein shakes (that taste nasty) a day and eating one meal of 3 oz of lean meat and 1 cup of vegetables (which is their pre-op diet)...but I have added this to my food diary on Myfitnesspal and basically it comes out to less than 600 calories a day. My stomach feels like it is eating my insides up and I even have a little pain in my lower chest that is nagging at me all day. I know I should be stronger than this...but this is so painful. I know my body is missing the sugar and carbs...because it is telling me every minute of the day.

I called my nutritionist at my doctor's office to see if she had any ideas and I had forgotten that they work 1/2 days on Friday. So I am asking for advice or help to get me over this hump...or is it going to be like this forever?

I'm right there with you! ! Today was day one of my pre-op diet, liquids only for two weeks. I don't want to see recipes and food ads, but they are everywhere! I cheated and added a salad to my dinner tonight because I was so hungry.

I'm on day six and its getting easier, I'm not having the stomach cramps as bad, but the craving for food is. So each day is still a battle but, when I think about grabbing something that I don't need I pick up a sugar free Jello or popsicle to curve the craving and I also started writing on my next romance novel which keeps me very busy.

I am 6 weeks post Gastric Bypass and I can tell you the pre-op diet was the hardest because you feel hunger and the first two days are the worst because your body is screaming for food but you adapt. I survived by distracting myself. Pedicure, window shopping. At one point I even spent an hour at Home Depot because it was the only store open late near my home. Warm broth saved me because i could eat it with a spoon like Soup and the warm tummy was happy. I made my own with chicken and with beef. It tasted amazing.

After the surgery you don't feel hunger so it's much easier. Some people do develop hunger later on. The trick is getting the Fluid intake. The first few weeks also are not terribly happy regarding food but now at week 7 I am feeling normal again. However my meals are 1/4 cup and a tablespoon worth of what my little heart desires and I try to have the best I can have.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
