How does Sleep Apnea complicate the VSG date?

Recommended Posts

I had to have a sleep study, but everyone in our program did. I was told it was an indicator for the surgery. The surgeon also told me if we have sleep apnea its something helpful for them to know before going under anesthesia. I do have apnea and am on my c-pap machine. I am not required to use it for a certain amount of time prior to surgery, it has not cause me any complications as far as my procedure is concerned. This is my experience with the whole thing!

It took me ONE night to love my CPAP I put my mask on, set alarm for work, place my head on my pillow and alarm goes off. No tossing and turning, no waking up, no night reading because I cannot sleep I do hope one day to not need it but for now it is my best friend.

You are so fortunate. I have sleep apnea and I am up more because of the mask then I was before I had to start using it. One of the biggest reasons I want surgery. I am hoping eight loss will "fix" my apnea. I am soooo tired all the time

You should see the place where they sell masks. Yours doesn't fit properly

JenSull I have the same problem with my mask as you do. I have tried other masks and they slip up the back of my head. I use to think it was just me but I have heard from quite a few people that they have problems. I do toss and turn a lot so I'm sure that is part of the problem. If I have a good night and think I figured it all out the next night is terrible. I have to use it or I don't get any rest at all. I am going in next week to look at another mask. I have been going through this for 6 or 7 yrs now. I am also hoping that when I lose a considerable amount of weight that I won't need the machine. Good luck.

Just try the "Bella Loops". They made all the difference. They hurt the skin around the backs of my ears for about a week, but then it was fine.

I was told by my surgeon and the bariatric clinic that if i was diagnosed with SA that they would want me to be on a sleep machine for a month. It is a co morbidity of being overly obese. Will just legthen your waiting time, is my understanding.

Gosh, I'm glad I did all that over the summer so I won't have to wait for that! Lord only knows what I still need to do. It's still a mystery. :)

I called about the bella loops and was told if I moved around a lot they would just slip off my ears.

Well, I had to redo my sleep study from 10 years ago, and low and behold! I no longer have sleep apnea! I was really surprised. I'm thinking the higher intensity exercise I've been doing has changed it for me!

1) While not all causes are the same, having to get up during the night to urinate is a sign of obstructive sleep apnea. Apnea and hypopnea interrupt brain chemistry, such that your body doesn't ramp down urine production like it would if you didn't have OSA.

2) Your surgeon and anesthesiologist will want it addressed prior to surgery. OSA leads to periods where your oxygen saturation will decline, sometimes to dangerous levels. This can be an issue in the recovery room and in the hospital after surgery when narcotics get added into the mix. Also, low oxygen levels impede tissue healing and can promote wound infection.

3) If you have sleep apnea and are prescribed a machine, you have to demonstrate compliance with the device in order to be approved, either by insurance, the surgeon, or both.

Ultimately, if there's a chance you have OSA, you need to test. If you do have OSA, you need CPAP therapy.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
